How was Evita received in Argentina?

Just got back from Evita and was wondering if anyone remembers how it was received when it first played in Argentina? I presume it was done there at some point, maybe not. Is there a consensus on how it is thought of today there? Hated? Loved? Is Evita herself still adored there?

I can’t speak for the movie, but I was in Buenos Aires, Argentina this last August and walked through the Recolata cemetery where many of the rich and important people in Buenos Aires are buried. Her burial site isn’t the most extravagant by a long sot, but what does strike you is the fact that in front of it is a mountain of flowers and letter and pictures to her that are constantly being refreshed. I took some pictres but not sure how to go about posting them here.

Evita is banned in Argentina because it portrays Eva Person as too saintly and/or too whory, depending on your point of view.

I wasn’t aware that it had been banned. I was in Buenos Aires as a student when it was announced that Madonna would star in the film version. A lot of people (particularly religious Catholic people) were VERY upset that Madonna, who they found to be of questionable character (she wasn’t British yet), would play their beloved Eva Peron.

It was explained to me that her burial site is separate from her husband’s family’s crypt because of her less than noble origins.

At least one person seems to approve.
