So when is Netflix getting the Christmas episode?
Yeah, great question. I didn’t realize they did not have it yet. I hope by this Christmas, they get it. I thought it was hands-down the best one yet. I try not to think about it because certain moments freak me out.
I also want to see the Christmas Episode.
The Christmas special made my wife sob uncontrollably for quite a while.
It’s not 100% certain yet, but if it does happen I’ll be very excited. It would make sense, since it has found a big audience on Netflix, and Netflix has brought back other shows before. I hope things don’t change too much in the transition.
I did not sob, but I shuddered. There are some technologies we do not need. I don’t want to overhype it, but it really bothered me in a way few movies/shows do. Everything from the A.I. implications to the final result of Jon Ham’s guy. The horror. The horror.
I just watched the whole series+Christmas Special about a week ago, so it was fresh in my mind.
I wanted to say something I thought was kind of amazing about the show. Who can imagine this pit thread happening about grainless people in The Entire History of You? It was the first thing I thought of when I read the OP.
Where can one watch this Christmas special?
It even showed the problems that could be encountered by not having a grain. It you want to fly you have to let the review the past couple of weeks. Employers want the same if you want a promotion. And the police hang up on you if you don’t have a grain recording of the incident you’re reporting. So you end up with incredible social pressure to have one and to make it’s contents available to anyone and everyone, and you’re looked on with suspicion if you don’t have one.
We’re not quite at that point yet, but people expect you to be on Facebook, and try having some kind of professional career without being on Linkedin.
FINALLY, Netflix got “White Christmas” and it was just as good as everyone has been saying. Wow! What an episode and Jon Hamm was quite fantastic in it!
Cool. I’ll have to check it out. Thank you.
I recently watched the Christmas episode. One of the better ones, maybe not my favorite.
I liked the way when Hamm’s little business/hobby is revealed you think “Wow, that is fucked up!” Then it’s revealed that there is a whole 'nother level of fucked up-ness on top of that. And then another on top of that! And another!
Yeah, it’s the most messed up one. And my favorite. It’s horrifying…and oddly believable.
Agreed. I just watched it Sunday night and it was good, and messed up, and Hamm was good, too!
I always felt Hamm’s punishment was way too harsh for his crime.
Totally blocked for life, right? Brutal.
My favorite story in the Christmas special was the middle one with the AI assistant. It raises so many interesting questions about ethics and metaphysics.
A few days before I saw the White Christmas episode I watched Her and thought how Black Mirror-ish it was.
The scary thing is that it is just a couple of steps up from current sex offenders list or (in the US at least as I understand) how employers can check if you have been convicted for a crime.
It adds:
- Immediate notification
- blocks all human visual and sound (do they also block smell?)
and perhaps his crime is little less serious then you would currently need to get on the list.
To me, one of the most impressive things about “White Christmas” (and, to some extent, the whole format of an entirely new story/cast each episode) was that it showed what a wealth of ideas the writers have - they can “afford” to make one show so jam-packed. They could’ve easily made one episode for the slave AIs, one for the grain, one for the blockings, etc; instead, they made one really, really awesome 70-ish minute experience.
I also agree that the grain-less woman was one of the most disturbing aspects, just because of how closely it parallels human nature. It’s exactly the sort of thing that would happen in our world - a minority choosing to opt out, then being seen as posers/snobs/self-righteous by 99% of people.
