The Ultimate Can They Do This at School Thread (Calling Kilt-Wearin' Man)

Alright, we’ve had threads about same-sex kisses in the school year-book, and bullying in the play ground, and wearing goth jewellry, and “Straight Pride” t-shirts - but this is the ultimate case of “Can the school board do that?”

I speak, of course, of the terrible discrimination against a young student who was punished by his school for celebrating his ethnic origins.

He wore a Kilt to the prom, and was exiled to detention!!!

The complete, heart-wrenching story is found here.

The ACLU is gonna hear about this!

Hordes of kilt-wearing, enraged Scots will descend on the school!!

Bagpipes will play, and play, and play, until this wrong is righted!!!

Scots wha’ hae wi’ Wallace bled,
Scots wham often Bruce has led,
Welcome, to your gory bed,
Or to Victory!

It seems like a fairly odd decision by the school authorities.

I wonder what would happen if every student turned up in the national costume of their ancestors.

That would count out the Greeks, probably the Mongols, the Irish, possibly the Japanese, Senegalese, the Zulus and there are many other African nations.

Then why not ban clothing for religious students, Buddhists Moslem pilgrims and more.

For an educational establishment they sure show a hell of a lot of ignorance about the world and its peoples.

I think this is outrageous!

The school authorities should not only apologise to the student and scotsmen everywhere, but every nation that wears funny clothes. OK, that doesn’t sound right, but you know what I mean

This kind of fascism is exactly why many people drop out of the school system.

I think that’s ridiculous. Highland dress is stunning and very formal. I don’t even think it’s so much a question of ethnic heritage; there’s just nothing inappropriate about a kilt worn properly. A black guy wore full Highland dress to my prom in Baltimore and he looked great. There were no problems of any kind with it.

Indeed – one of my friends was married in his kilt - it’s his standard formal dress.

When I go black tie, it’s always in my family tartan w/Prince Charlie (See my picture on People Pages). It’s more formal than much of what passes for ‘black tie’ today.

A certain set of school officials need an education…

I think that’s outrageous.

I just had my Formal/Prom. two weeks ago, and two students showed up in kilts. Of course, they got in no trouble at all.

Nobody wore a kilt to my prom.
[sub]There was the guy that made a Hawaiian vest and bowtie, and wore beach sandals with his tux, though…He got away with it.[/sub]

The kid should argue that he’s being discriminated against due to his racial heritage.

My formal dress of choice is the full Highland outfit - I have a tux, but it is always second choice.

Damn right this is discrimination - they probably thought he was wearing a girls skirt.

Of course, having looked at the link, it’s a “Utilikilt” the kid was wearing, which I’ve seen in person for sale. Some of their products are in camo print, have cargo pockets sewn on them, etc - a photo would’ve been helpful to know what the kid was wearing.

If he was in a proper kilt, then yeah the school is WAY in the wrong. If it’s one of Utilikilt’s more …shall we say modified garments, then it might have been inappropriate. Like I said, it would help if there was a photo on the news story. Either way, the kid should fight - especially since the principal is insisting that there wasn’t a dress code violation. Exactly why was he barred from the little parade thing, anyway?

BTW- If any dopers out there need kilts for formal occasions, most Highlandwear companies will rent full proper formal outfits for not much more than a tux rental.
