The United States Declares Economic War on Canada

What has Trudeau done? Smith has done more than he has with his ‘Team Canada’. Here is Team Canada:
Quebec continues to reject pipelines. They don’t seem to object to taking Alberta’s money, though.

Singh backs Quebec’s position on pipelines
To the ruling class in Canada, Team Canada doesn’t include Alberta because that is the way they want it. It has nothing to do with what Smith does or doesn’t do. She worked to keep the tariff down to 10% on Oil and Gas is good for Alberta and good for Canada. Trudeau didn’t do that. He was ready to throw the whole industry under the bus. Given the spotlight on the importance of the industry to Canada, provinces and politicians still won’t do what is necessary to ensure that ‘Canada’ can get its products to market.
It is only Canada’s resources when it affects the east, but Alberta’s when we want to ship it.
So, if Alberta is forced to ship south because Team Canada won’t let it ship east/west, then it makes sense to remove the barriers and become the 51st state. It would be far better off and richer for it.
But there is some hope no matter what politicians may say. Not that it will change anything.: Sea to Sea Pipeline

There is so much to unpack here. I’m not certain if I can do it.

I’ll just say that back in Dec you told me that this issue was because of Canada’s drug exportation to the US (you even leveled a claim that the SDMB is an “echo chamber” when I asked for a citation to your claims)… I now have a related question, do you still believe that?

Washington used to have ‘liquor stores’ where you could buy spirits; but for many years now, they can be sold through grocery markets and such. We have a ‘corner market’ and a liquor store where I live. The corner market decided to stick to selling wine and beer, and let the liquor store sell spirits. The market doesn’t have to deal with new licensing and lack of space, and the liquor store (which only sells spirits, wine, & mixers – no snacks) gets to stay in business.

Anyway… The woman who owns the liquor store (Jeez, I remember when she was a teenager helping out her dad!) is very helpful. She has recommended things I’d never heard of. I’ll ask her about her Canadian whiskey selections.

Trump has given five different reasons he is concerned: drugs, immigration, banking, “trade subsidy” (as a synonym for merely purchasing goods) and Canschluss.

The main reason drugs were brought up is that he needed to declare an “emergency” to unilaterally abrogate the treaty he personally signed.

Oh its been painfully obvious to all that Trump is arbitrarily giving excuses to fig leaf his hostile behaviour. I’m just curious if Uzi still is on board with the farce or perhaps is still aligned with it as he seems to be openly pro-annexation (quite the fringe political opinion here).

Yes, this is an echo chamber

Aligned with what? The orange buffoon wanting to force Canada to become part of the US? Not at all. Should Canada be a separate country? Not at all. There isn’t enough difference between us and Americans that justifies the separation. Trudope himself says we don’t have any core identity as Canadians. That we aren’t Americans isn’t enough to justify nationhood.

Also, as an Albertan, I see the ROC as hostile as many are seeing the Americans now. What is the difference between some foreign state preventing us from doing business and the Federal government/other provinces? We see the US drilling, we see eastern Canada buying from Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, etc., all bastions of human rights. Danielle Smith tries to protect Albertans, it is damned sure no one else will.

Ah, there we go.

Again, a lot of rage and random swings that all deserves unpacking. I need to stay focused though. Do you recognize how much your views (that Canada should be absorbed into the US) is fringe?

If yes, do you think that perhaps the out-of-ordinary political stance you have …contributes to your despise of Trudeau? Or how it forces you to see the SDMB as an “echo chamber”?

If no, why do you think Canada hasn’t joined the US as a (or many) state(s) yet?

I mean, I have stated many times that don’t like Trudeau; but when I have done so it was in reference to a political act he has done. Your hate seems to be unrestrained to any action he has taken. It’s just hate and name calling.

Its very normal to hate politicians… but it needs to be for stated actions they take. Otherwise I feel you hate him, just because he exists on a political spectrum that is mainstream. Thus you revile him.

I disagree. His hatred of Trudeau is largely based in Trudeau not being slavishly obeisant to the oil and gas industry, as all good Albertan politicians are. Note, for example, the prominent thread in his posts of how Alberta is persecuted by the rest of Canada for not allowing unlimited pipelines. And please, do not try to bring up the fact that Trudeau had the feds buy out the Trans Mountain Pipeline. That doesn’t count in Trudeau’s favour because reasons.

I guess. I just cannot understand for hating Trudeau about oil, when (quite frankly) HE DIDN’T use any retaliatory measures in regards to oil. All Trudeau did was get the “First Ministers” on the same page with the messaging and game plan (an otherwise impossible feat were it not for Trump’s vile hostility towards us and our trade agreements).

There’s literally nothing there to hate. But Trudeau gets the same strong hatred none-the-less. I can only assume Trudeau is hated because he isn’t as political fringe as Uzi (my own guess).

So move there.

Hmmm, I called him Trudope. Because he is a lightweight hypocrite that wears black face and doesn’t think the laws should apply to him eg. all the scandals he’s been involved in including violating the rights of our fellow Canadians. There is nothing ‘irrational’ about my distaste for him. But I also called Drumpf an orange buffoon. No comments on me doing that, of course. My distaste for him wouldn’t be considered ‘irrational’ even though their actions are on par with each other. The difference being one fits in with those of the echo chamber.

Good thing Alberta’s politicians are honest to a fault

I saw this on the wall at my local race book, posted among the profile sheets for today’s horse races (click to enlarge):

No idea if it was an initiative of the management, but if it was, it wouldn’t surprise me.

Fascinating. Someone went to a fair bit of work there.

A good idea. There are some quibbles. I have never seen some of the American products mentioned sold in Ontario. I have read lots of grocers are putting up signage to better identify Canadian products.

If our guys from Fort Drum start marching through the streets of Kingston, Canada does not become part of the United States. It becomes what is, in American legal terms, unincorporated territory – NOT part of the United States. In less legalistic terms, it would be occupied territory AKA a colony. To get an improved status would require an act from our Congress, which has zero Canadian members (unless you count Ted Cruz) and no incentive to help you guys.

Trump does not want Canada’s natural resources so the residents of the ten provinces can sell at market prices with zero tariffs. They can do that now. Despite all prior promises, Trump would want to recoup this investment, just as he wanted in Iraq. This is his mentality:

Trump’s plan to seize Iraq’s oil: ‘It’s not stealing, we’re reimbursing ourselves’

The relevant difference between Trudeau and Trump is that Trudeau is pro-Canada, and Trump is, at best, pro-red-states…

The Insular cases have always been subject to a lot of criticism. Just recently, one SCOTUS judge, although concurring in the outcome of a majority decision concerning Puerto Rico, criticised the Insular cases, and said that they are “shameful,” “have no foundation in the Constitution and rest instead on racial stereotypes,” and “deserve no place in our law.”
