I don’t agree with the word fascist, but I agree with the rest of it.
Trump would say that due to whatever low number of American troops were killed, Canadians no longer deserve the wonders of statehood, or freedom from tariffs, or keeping O Canada, or any other goodie he ever promised Canadians.
We already have a model U.S-controlled territory where the residents are not U.S. citizens – American Samoa. Canadians would be very lucky to get similar treatment.
I was born and raised in America, and of deep American heritage, but I’m also a Canadian citizen and resident, the eighth generation in my family to be so.
We are NOT the same, and I will merrily join the resistance.
We were like brothers: close kin, until you married that Trump fool and lost your mind. Now we barely speak, and even if you dump his ass tomorrow, you’re still not welcome at the Thanksgiving table.
No way would Trump offer any of that, if we made him actually go through with the hassle of an invasion, and didn’t just roll over for him. And even if we did roll over for him, most of that would still be off the table.
Canadian money at par? No way does he just give every Canadian a 30-40% boost in their wealth for free. We’d be lucky if he lets us buy US dollars at some ruinous exchange rate, rather than just declaring the Canadian dollar a dead currency.
And healthcare? There’s no situation in which he accepts 40 million new citizens with functional universal healthcare. Firstly, that sets a bad example for the rest of America, who might start asking why they don’t get this. Secondly, they’ll need to spend tax dollars on this, which is a non-starter. Thirdly, no way do the oligarchs accept their new peons if we’re not shackled to our jobs by the need for private health insurance.
And they won’t be “tariffs”. They will be a new “temporary tax” on “new states” that will last “until the bill for freeing them from the tyranny of Trudeau is fully paid”.
Okay, first off, you’re contradicting yourself here. New Canadians won’t fight for Canada because they really wanted to be Americans, but then they know they’re going to get kicked out of American anyways? I’d say they’d be ripe for resistance at that point.
And secondly, the whole point of an insurgency is you don’t need everyone to be involved. If 10% of the population decides to get involved, that’s 400 thousand people. And if, as with most such organizations, only 10% do actual fighting, that’s still 40 thousand killers, supported by 360 thousand support staff who offer food, supplies, places to hide, an underground railroad to move them around, and all that. Stop and think about how much damage 19 people did on 9/11. Now multiply that by 2000. We could carry out a major attack every week for decades, even if every fighter we send gets gunned down in the process.
And I can’t imagine us being less committed than the IRA.
And that doesn’t even consider recruiting Americans to our cause. If even 0.1% of the US joins us, that doubles our numbers.
I just have to say that this thread is about the US declaring economic war on Canada, as they have against many other nations due to having an ignorant man-child as president and a spineless Congress that makes the founding principles of checks and balances nothing more than a bad joke. All this is true, and all three nations that are signatories to the illegally violated CUSMA/USMCA will suffer economic consequences.
But I just wish we’d stop these paranoid fantasies about a US military invasion. The concept is so ridiculous that in happier times, in 1995, a movie was made that parodied the concept. Not even the Orange Felon has hinted at such a possibility, though he has with respect to Greenland. And not even that is gonna happen.
Let’s by all means boost our national defenses – I’m all in favour of that – but come on, folks, let’s also live in the real world!
I think it’s useful to imagine what it would look like. It’s insanely unlikely today, but… less unlikely than it was two months ago. At this stage I’m not ruling anything out, even the ridiculous shit.
My pet conspiracy theory is that he’s intentionally tanking the U.S. economy to justify assuming emergency powers. But that’s craaaaaaaaaaazy.
On the other hand, the National Emergencies Act is a very flimsy piece of legislation. More than 30 national emergencies, some of them dating back to 1979, are still in effect. The major safeguard was the “legislative veto,” i.e., Congress could decide to terminate national emergencies via a concurrent resolution. But the Supreme Court said that was blatantly unconstitutional. So, now, to end an emergency, Congress must pass a joint resolution…
… that requires the president’s signature to become effective, or a two-thirds majority. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Since when? Even before Trump the US had a lower standard of living.
And Canadians would be living as slave laborers in wrecked cities, a decimated population, and under occupation by soldiers who kill anyone they see who might be a threat and have a habit of rape and torture. So the surviving Canadians would have plenty of reason to fight.
Although it wouldn’t help in the long run, since they’d be fighting fascists who have no problem with dealing with the issue of being unable to tell who is and isn’t a resistance member by simply killing everybody.
This quote is also from a satirical movie. Isn’t it? Or is it the American Health Secretary now?
Base Commander Jack D. Ripper: Do you realize that in addition to fluoridating water, why, there are studies underway to fluoridate salt, flour, fruit juices, soup, sugar, milk, ice cream? Ice cream, Mandrake? Children’s ice cream!..You know when fluoridation began?..1946. 1946, Mandrake. How does that coincide with your post-war Commie conspiracy, huh? It’s incredibly obvious, isn’t it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual, and certainly without any choice. That’s the way your hard-core Commie works. I first became aware of it, Mandrake, during the physical act of love… Yes, a profound sense of fatigue, a feeling of emptiness followed. Luckily I - I was able to interpret these feelings correctly. Loss of essence. I can assure you it has not recurred, Mandrake. Women, er, women sense my power, and they seek the life essence. I do not avoid women, Mandrake…but I do deny them my essence.
A state of emergency is how he’s already justifying nearly all of the more outrageous actions. As you already noted, it’s rather easy to declare one. Lack of yet another emergency declaration isn’t stopping anything.
And as I noted in the Compendium of Horrors thread, Congress – which would normally be the branch of government best positioned to prevent such abuses by the executive branch according to the checks and balances scheme designed by the Founders – is fully on board with everything Trump is doing.
The Founders got a lot of things wrong, but in retrospect, their misguided attempt to limit voting to those they considered to be the moire educated segment of the population wasn’t entirely wrong.
First, there is no way in hell the Canadians would be allowed to keep their healthcare. One of the “justifications” for this bullshit is to “save” Canadians from high taxes. Also, the Trumplikins/MAGA/Republicans simply can not have a system competing with their for-profit “healthcare” wealth extraction racket. The “evil”, socialist health care system must be dismantled so that money can go to the oligarchs.
Second, all sorts of legislation will have to be overturned as part of the “culture wars”.
Finally, Canadians will have to be punished for “forcing” Trump to go to war with them. There will be all sorts of punitive bullshit imposed. Canadians will be second class citizens (at best) and under suspicion.
Also, why do you assume the Canadians have no care about their nationality? Would Americans accept a “benevolent” conquering nation coming in to take over? How would you feel if Canada took over your country? Do you think there would be no changes?
… and that statement marks you as a US citizen. No, Canadians are not simply another variety of US American.
And, finally - life will NOT be the same for Canadians… and it won’t be the same for Americans, either. Because that would be just another dozen (or more) steps along the way to a fascist dictatorship under MAGA.
He’s one of the rare few. Right-wing Trump supporting Canadian who is pro joining the US. (of course this is my own interpretation, people are allowed to change their beliefs by the minute or hold widely inconsistent views)
Canada has ALWAYS been multi-national, right from the start to now (with varying degrees of official recognition). You would be surprised on what being invaded and occupied can do to a people. Canada CURRENTLY draws from its entire population to make up the armed forces (including new immigrants). A childhood friend of mine was born in the US, but was Canadian enough to fight and die for Canada in Afghanistan some 20 years ago. I think you underestimate Canadians.
Where do you get the idea I’m a Trump supporter? I’ve called him an idiot. Those who vote for him are idiots. But at the same time, those who vote for Prime Minister Black Face and his clones are idiots. He’s one of the key reasons we are in this particular dilemma. Trump has no respect for him. Nor should he. Nor should we. Now we have a puppet in his place who is gaining support. Here’s a great idea, let’s antagonize the Orangutan even more. Maybe it would be better if we redirect his shit throwing in another direction rather than jumping up and down hooting at him.
That’s what Canada is actually famous for. In WW1, we took Vimy Ridge using new tactics. We did similar in WW2. So, instead of pounding our chests maybe think of a different way to act/react.
