The upcoming Big Freeze (1-18 to 1-22)

I think you need to check ESPN again. There’s no freaking way that the CFP would allow the championship game to be played at one of the schools, particularly the lower-ranked team.

Here’s the schedule/scores for the playoffs from ESPN.

Meant to add I just did, but I know what I saw and was puzzled as a result because I was pretty sure it should have been at a warm site. Shrug

I live outside of Duluth, MN. On Sunday our high/low is -10/-18 with 20mph winds. That means high/low with windchill will be -35/-46. I’ll be doing my grocery shopping and any other errands on Friday.

On Tuesday, we’re heading from home in Southern Merrylande to Ocean City, MD for a few days of hiding out. Temps when we leave here are forecast to be 9°. Highs will be in the teens the first 2 days we’re there, creeping up to low 40s when we leave on Friday. I don’t foresee any walks along the beach.

We have a Saturday - Monday vacation planned in the sunny climes of…(checks notes)…Maine. Well then. Looks like 19/5 our last day there, which isn’t terrible, but as @fairychatmom said, no walks on the beach planned.

I typically don’t schedule travel in January and February because of unpredictable weather.

Several years ago my cousins and I went to London at the end of February. It was predicted to be moderate so I just wore a medium weight jacket.

JFC it was bitterly cold and also snowed. I froze most of the time and my socks decided to rip to shreds during an outing.

I had to wrap my feet in some delightful full strength napkins that were provided somewhere for lunch. That worked well until I could locate a store that sold decent socks (not skimpy tourist anklets with the iconic landmarks).

I always pack extra socks in my car for weather like this.

Dunno about the Mall but the Weather Underground station nearest us on the opposite side of the river is predicting a couple inches of snow Sunday and 15MPH winds Monday, making the 26° high feel more like 14°.

That would be such a shame!!

Maybe past Dem Presidents and their spouses should stay away due to health concerns. Obama’s the only living former (or soon to be former) Dem President who’s less than 78 years old.

I’m pretty sure they are. Only Biden to attend.

It isn’t because of health reasons though.

What are you guys talking about? Here in Chicago today the sun was shining, snow was melting, and temp read 37F on the drive home. Going for a bike ride tomorrow!

Over in the LA fire threads folk were arguing that cold and snow are more dangerous than wildfire. Let’s see - forecast is for cold. We made sure we have fixings for a couple of pots of soup and chili, and have plenty of reading and streaming material. Where do we apply for our disaster relief?

Once when we were in Bristol VA/TN, the temp got down to 14 below zero, Fahrenheit. My wife and I took a bit more time warming up our cars that morning before we headed for our respective offices. That was it - came back that evening and our house and all our possessions were still miraculously  there.

Sounds like a narrow escape!

The upcoming freeze does not look promising for next week in my area north of Pittsburgh.

Tuesday it looks like a high of 8 degrees and -13 at night.

Lucky me - I have 3 court hearings that morning.

Today I had to clean the snow from my car 4 times already - once to get to work, once to get to court, once to get to Dunkin Donut and just now to drive home.

Not enjoying this blast of cold and snow.

Here in Chicago they are predicting 3 days w/ high of 10F or below. Not a big deal at all.

For me any kind of ice and snow is a big deal. But with the frigid temperatures it just makes it more dangerous. I do my best to walk safely and slowly but any kind of accident could be death sentence for me.

Here in Cleveland, everyone’s pretty much expecting that we’ll have at least Tuesday off school, and possibly Wednesday (it’s expected to get back up to sane temperatures on Wednesday, but not until after the time when kids would be en route to school).

Colorado Springs here, expectations

Saturday H 16 L -6 Fail Units, snow likely 68%

Sunday H 10 L -5F, snow possible 48%

Monday H 6 L -5F, snow possible 43%

Expected windchill to be mild, up to a loss of an additional 10F. Total expected snow under half a foot.

Probably no major issues, as temps in this range normally happen a couple of times a year, but it is pretty rare to have it for three days in a row. Thankfully, comparatively little wind, compared to some storms - the wind tends to knock power out which would be the biggest risk (no power, no heat, although we’ve got enough wood stockpiled for outages up to 12ish hours, and could run heaters for at least that long off the PHEV).

Wanted to add (but past edit window), my biggest concern is Friday we’ll go from 50F to 10 overnight… with an 82% chance of rain/sleet. Which means we could end up with a noticeable layer of ice that gets covered by snow. Which isn’t going to be fun no matter your cold weather driving skills, tires, and drive configuration. Not to mention coatings of ice are a big no when it comes to the integrity of overhead power lines.

So all groceries are getting done Friday morning, and my wife is preparing on working from home Monday juuuuuust in case.

Actually, this thread got me wondering, especially in light of another recent thread:

What emergency heat plans do most of you have in the event of a main heat loss?

I live down the road from St. Louis. Truth be told, it just looks like “winter” to me, nothing more, nothing less.
