The upcoming Big Freeze (1-18 to 1-22)

I mean, yeah. Standard advice here in Colorado as well, as is to always have a few blankets in the car if you get stopped/stuck in a storm. Although in over 20 years of living here full time I’ve never needed it, I’ve always had it.

3 below (F) this morning, says the max-min thermometer. I didn’t go out to look at it till midday.

My neighbor came up to look for a heater he thought he’d left in a hunting blind, because the drywall mud in a room he’s working on (they’ve had to basically rebuild their whole house, long story) wasn’t setting up because the outside walls were too cold. Both of us are going through firewood at a high rate of speed. Warm near our stoves, though.

It’s supposed to get somewhat warmer for the rest of the week.

It was negative Fahrenheit this morning, but we’re past the worst of it. 12º now, and it’s expected to be a balmy 17º tomorrow morning on the way to school. Well, OK, that’s still pretty cold, but that’s not even cold enough for me to take all my winter measures on my bike.

About 14F (-10 C) here in central Maryland this morning. Made for a chilly wait for the train, which fortunately was only a few minutes.

My boiler is indeed buggered. Nobody in my building has any heat. I tried bleeding the radiators and absolutely nothing came out. Slept in longjohns, under several blankets, lying on a heating pad, and my lungs still feel like they’re filled with gum. Bylaw officers have been notified, as it’s illegal for a building to keep apartments under 20 degrees or something like that, but until someone stays home and lets them into their place to do a temperature reading, the city’s hands are tied. My super says that he hopes to have the replacement part installed today, but if his supply chain is anything like the one I deal with at work, I should get heat back by easter.

Not a happy camper.

I’m at my mom’s right now, where the water pump on her furnace blew a few hours ago. The guy just showed up and is working on it, hopefully he has the parts he needs.

Sunday morning’s race was 12°, that’s a lot of cold air in the lungs.

Headed north from there; getting to the outdoor hot tub wasn’t all that bad except for the wooden steps into it, which were barefooted as I took my sandals off. Even getting out & attempting (the snow was pretty packed down) to make snow angels in my bathing suit wasn’t all that bad as I was mentally prepared for it, nor hardly the first time I’ve done that, either. Going back inside wasn’t that bad. Getting changed for bed & coming out wasn’t that bad. Taking off outer layers & getting into the cold-weather sleeping bad wasn’t the most pleasant but survivable. Waking up to ice on the sleeping bag (the moisture in my exhalations froze) wasn’t exactly nice but I went back to sleep once I figured out how to reposition the sleeping bag. Getting up & going back inside wasn’t all that bad. Showered & got dressed for a cold day out but man, when the doors of the hotel opened, it took your breath away.

Drinks in the bar didn’t need ice because that’s what the ‘glasses’ were made of!

Glad we were inside last night as it was -8°F when we got up. It slowly warmed up as we drove South/towards home but barely double-digit temps, before windchill were not pleasant when I stepped out to get some pictures by wide open, & frozen, rivers.

Surprisingly, found usable window wash buckets at various gas stations but the glass was cold enough that I would have ice streaks in the couple of seconds between washing the salt off & attempting to squeegee dry. It was so cold the rubber didn’t flex to the glass.

It’s currently 11°F warmer here today than what it is where we were yesterday.

He finally got it fixed. I came home, my wife and I ate dinner, and then my daughter called from her apartment north of Boston to say that when she flushed the toilet, sewage backed up into her tub.

Exciting times!

Still pretty cold up in the Colorado mountains. -13f last night. That’s not real unusual, but sometimes we don’t see that all year.

Here in southern SC it was 13 deg at 6 am. We had a good bit of snow on Tues but it mostly melted (at my place anyway) yesterday. Weds is a day off for me, we’ll see what the roads are like when I go in this morning. There was just enough sun and temps barely above freezing to get some melting, but I don’t think enough to really dry the roads. I bet there are going to be some dicey - icy areas! Going to leave wicked early and tiptoe in to work, I guess.
