To all you Star Control 2 fans: the first public alpha for The Ur-Quan Masters has been released! It’s a port of the 3DO version, and you can get it at sc2.sourceforge.net. It’s a pretty big download, though, and being an alpha, it’s got its share of bugs. Still, the game appears to be coming along nicely. Have fun!
I guess all the Star Control 2 fans have gone out to pasture.
Is this basically a windows compatable version of star control 2, or am I missing something?
Cool.
I was always curious about SC2. I owned a copy of the original for the Sega Genesis a whole truckload of years back (was it ever released as a PC game?) which I pretty much burnt out.
(Yeah, I’ve got an emulator and the roms for it. But it’s not quite the same.)
I picked up SC3 (for PC) in a bargain bin a couple years back, and though it was a bit clunky, with a steep learning curve for the first couple plays, but it was fun to see all the old gang (well, most of them) again.
But I never did track down the second game, and the third refers to it heavily, in the setup and in some game events. So, is this SC2, or what?

Groovy.
I think I’ll wait till they get past alpha builds, but it’s excellent that the project didn’t stall. SC2 was one of the greats.
Well, there was the PC version, then there was the Sega version, and then there was the 3DO version, which had CG movies, speech, smooth zooming in battles, and some remixed music, and other features here and there. The 3DO version is the one they’re porting (and it’s going to be compatible with a several OSes, like Linux, BeOS, and Windows). This alpha doesn’t have the movies in it yet. The good thing is that it’s good for people who have problems running the original on their modern machines.
By the way, Star Control 3 wasn’t made by the people who made Star Control 2, and many consider it an atrocity - it really didn’t live up to the Star Control name.
