The usps put tracking on my stuff without me asking and now i am irate

Well, not really, but instead of netting the $1.28 I should have off my eBay sales, I lost 68 cents. Losing money is not how eBay is supposed to work.

My question is…are they allowed to add tracking without me asking and without asking to do it? Can I ask them not to do it or is it now “bundled” with the shipping service? I shipped the stuff first class if that matters.

The USPS website says “included at no extra charge” for first class parcels. Which seems to be new. Was there an extra charge?

Yeah, they charged $1.05 extra for each of the two things I mailed.

How do you buy postage and not know how much you’re paying?

When you use any common carrier, it’s up to you to know their policies, and act according. Just like when you fly. It’s not up to the carrier to notify you if they change their policies. Sorry for your loss but if you are a regular users of USPS, you should familiar with their shipping policies and features on a regular basis.

FWIW, I’m surprised you didn’t know about the tracking. USPS has been advertising this new feature for a while in the media, including TV.

I’m curious about this, too. I can’t find or figure any way a retailer, especially the USPS, could just slide $2.00 in extra charges past someone, especially when they appear to represent something like a 100% overcharge - or more.

It has been 5 weeks since I retired as a USPS window clerk but when I was there, delivery confirmation (or tracking, USPS likes to change names) was an option for first class parcels and included free for express, priority and standard parcels. To make things more confusing, even if you decline the delivery confirmation (the window clerk is supposed to ask you if you want it, along with insurance, stamps or other items), the computer called a POS will print a delivery barcode PVI label. The 20 digit number (or however many it was) will appear on your receipt although supposedly you can’t track it. Never tried it but supposedly you have to pay the $1.05 Why does USPS put a tracking label on a first class parcel that the customer didn’t pay for tracking? Because we, or rather they, are the gubbermint- occasionally do silly stuff. But they do like to track stuff, to help determine man-hour needs.
Like I said, it has been 5 weeks since I window clerked so they may have decent to include tracking free of charge as they do for express (which USPS stupidly calls priority express), priority and standard. If they don’t, take your white receipt (you still have the receipt, right?) which will tell you if you paid for first class tracking that you didn’t want and talk to the postmaster or supervisor.
It is possible the clerk hit the wrong tab on the POS but not likely. Whether or not the PM will give you a refund depends on them-it’s their office, their decision as you did leave the branch after paying for it, so apparently you were happy at the point of sale. Oh yes, if they give a refund, you will fill out a refund sheet. No job is complete unless the paperwork is done.
It is possible the clerk made a mistake or is new. There is a lot involved at the job and mistakes happen.

I thought I was the victim of an oppressive corporate machine, but actually what they did was charge me the parcel rate because what I shipped wasn’t flexible enough to be a letter.

My bad.
