"The Usual Reasons" from Aspects of Love

I’ve got a question about David Garnett’s book Aspects of Love (yes, the one the musical was based on).

Here’s the excerpt in question:

*Alexis pondered for a little and answered: "I got expelled from my public school last year - the usual reason…

…Rose asked what he meant by “the usual reason” and laughed a good deal when Alexis explained.*

Can anyone tell me what is meant by “the usual reason?” I’m assuming this is some sort of European expression.

Thanks.

Just a guess, but the stereotype is that British public schools are where homosexual activites are relatively common.

Neither the book or the show undertakes to specifically explain this – in the show, it’s George that tells the tale on Alex, as he and Rose are getting to know each other.

Based on Rose’s laughter in both versions, I think RealityChuck’s guess is a good one. But we’ll never know for sure.
