The video for White Stripes "Seven Nation Army"

I’m not a White Stripes fan, but I am a video production afficianado.

And I can’t for the life of me figure out how they do that “Seven Nations Army” video. I watch it closely looking for obvious borders between layers/chromakey but it looks completely seamless! If the people stayed within their little “triangles” (you’d have to see the video to understand) the explanation would be obvious. But they don’t; they break out of their triangles as the camera keeps zooming in. In fact, it behaves exactly like a fractal!!

So, can anyone shead some light on how this effect is done??

Nice video, great band.

My guess is that they cloned them.

But hopefully someone can give a better answer, because I want to know too.

I would have thought it would be relatively simple to use video editing software to overlay, scale and blend the individual elements.

You would need to overlay a few scenes simultaneously, and when the biggest one disappeared out of view you would stop including it. Meanwhile you would gradually add new scenes, initially very small, at the front (it appears that you are travelling down a tunnel: thus you would think that the new images would be behind the older ones; in fact they are in front of the older ones).

As to the absence of lines at the borders of the layers, I understood that modern video editing software could do that pretty seamlessly, especially as the images in the video are high-contrast with a few simple colors.

Of course this is only a guess.
