Well, this season seems to be off to a strong start. To be honest, I liked everybody, even the two that no-one turned for. Both times I was like, “WTF?”
And Bryan Bautista’s unintentional fake-out was awesome.
I don’t really have any critiques to post because they would all be similar. I will say though that Mary Sarah’s classic voice was definitely the most unique and I think that she’ll go far. Anyway, I’ll leave the more detailed critiques to the pros like Irishman, aceplace57, and Heffalump and Roo if they decide to post here.
Mondays premier was very good. A lot of very good talent. My favorites from Monday are…
Alisan Porter’s cover of Linda Ronstadt’s Blue Bayou - 90% sure Alisan will be in the finals
Mary Sarah cover of Connie Francis’ Where the Boys Are I loved her retro, old school voice — another potential finalist
Nick Hagelin cover Maroon Five’s Lost Stars (his falsetto faltered a bit at the end of the song) but thats a tough song to sing. Check out Adam singing it and theres a big difference.
Mike Schiavo Talking Body – A song I’ve never heard before. I was really impressed with his impromptu performance with Adam on She Will Be Love. Imagine singing a song totally unprepared. He didn’t even know the chords and Mike still kept his cool and pulled it off. Thats musicianship.
Tuesdays show wasn’t nearly as good. There were only a couple people that impressed me.
Yesterday a Blazer’s game preempted all but the last half hour of The Voice. Usually our NBC affiliate will play The Voice at a later time if it’s preempted, but they didn’t do it this time.
I watched it today and only saw Brittney Lawrence, Matt Tededer, and Joe Maye. WOW!!! His duet with Christina killed!!!
This season is sooo much better than last season already. I read someone say it’s the anti-season 9 season. Last season didn’t have much going for it, although Jordan Smith was great.
This season, the talent is so good that it’s hard for any one of them to really stand out. I lost count of the number of people who have famous ties or famous lives. Everyone is impressed with Alisan, but I’m not as impressed.
My favorites this season are Emily Keener and Ryan Quinn. I really like how they reinterpreted their songs. It’s hard to tell how either of them will fare once someone else is picking the songs though.
It really is off to a great start this season. Thanks for starting the thread, Nobody.
Seems like there are more country artists this season. Last season a couple country artists went with other coaches. Blake had a lot of music styles on his team season 9. He’s got more country acts this time with a few other styles mixed in.
Lot of good talent this time. I think it will be a lot better than season 9. A lot depends on the Battle rounds. Sometimes the coach gives a talented singer a song that doesn’t fit their style. They have a bad night and get eliminated early.
That’s what I love about this thread. You make me look at my preferences more clearly.
I liked Emily’s tone at the beginning. Her first line caught me. The second line was phrased weird or she flubbed it because it wasn’t very good, but it was mostly hidden under applause. Then when she was singing the words part of the song, her voice was a little odd, like her pronounciation was weird or something. But she redeemed herself in the top notes she hit without words. I just really liked all the different parts put together in one song. It’s hard to tell if that will translate into any other songs sounding good.
I like Ryan’s tone a lot. And his range. And I like that he seems like a nice guy. And I like that he was able to change up that song enough to showcase all the different parts of his voice.
You might be right about them though. Just because they can change a song up enough to make an audition sound good doesn’t mean they can sing a song someone else picks and choreographs.
I was watching this youtube video on the coaches’ best memories of the show. They showed the coaches’ favorite blind audition, their toughest battle choice and their favorite moment. I’m glad to see that I’m not the only person haunted by the Jessie Campbell decision. Christina picked that battle as her toughest decision and wondered why she put those two together in the first place. I often go searching to see how Jesse Campbell is doing. I so want to see him do well.
Unrelated to that, but on the topic of haunting me, the suicide of Anthony Riley was so incredibly sad. When I watch his blind audition video, I’m reminded of the great loss of his talent.
Her singing was just too weird for my taste. Especially when she got very low. Her high notes were good, but it doesn’t seem like she can transition smoothly. Anyway, like I said, I might change my mind in the battle rounds.
I thought that Ryan was OK, not bad. But it’s totally due my preferences as opposed to anything objective. Actually, re-listening I like his performance a little better. I guess my main problem is with his falsetto. I’m guessing he’ll win his knockout round.
I forgot about that and had to look it up. He said he dropped out to get drug treatment and that the show paid for it. The Voice won’t comment, but if true then it’s one of the rare times when people associated with the music industry aren’t being shady and sleazy. Good for them.
They rolled out some of their best singers for the first battle rounds. The number of steals pretty much confirms the coaches knew these were very good singers.
Maybe I’m Amazed was my favorite. Love that Paul McCartney song. Ryan Quinn and Katie Basden did a nice job. I thought Ryan Quinn was better and Adam made the right choice. But Ryan had the advantage because he was singing McCartney’s part. Glad Katie got stole.
*It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World *(James Brown) was awesome. Bryan Bautista and Malik Heard did a great job. The steal was obvious.
I dislike the song I Know What You Did Last Summer, but Paxton Ingram clearly was much better and more experienced than Brittney Lawrence. The style of this song seemed to confuse her but Paxton helped her learn it. She did ok. The steal surprised me.
Wanted to explain about the Brittney Lawrence steal. The coaches only get two steals. I was surprised they used up one this early. She was ok, but they’ll be much better opportunities to steal a great singer in the later rounds.
I thought that Brittney was great and I’m glad that she was stolen.
Going back to the blinds, although I liked Ayanna does anybody else think she should work on her enunciation just a little bit or did you all understand all the words that she sang?
I had the opposite reaction of the Ryan/Katie battle. I was disappointed with Ryan. He looked so stiff and his high notes were thin, as one of the coaches commented. It was still good, but my expectations for him were very high. I hope he does something spectacular in the knock-outs.
I did agree with Adam’s pick of Ryan, only because Ryan is more distinctive. Katie has a nice voice, but I just watched her blind audition, and I had already forgotten her.
I was shocked that Christina picked Bryan. I thought Malik did better. I didn’t see what others saw in Malik during the blinds, but he was great in this battle. I’m glad both are going through.
Brittney’s steal surprised me as well. There’s too much great talent this season to be fighting over someone who isn’t stellar. She did really well though.
I’m getting a little tired of the same songs in the battles. These same songs have been done too many times, albeit with epic results. It’s hard to see the greatness of the singers when I’m comparing the performance to old performances that were really epic. I was reminded of the Judith Hill battle and the Terry McDermott knockout.
I just watched it again. She’s clearly aware of her enunciation because she makes it a point to say the ‘t’ in a couple places. Towards the middle, she was trying really hard to keep her tone round, so the words did get garbled. Patti LaBelle looks like a stickler for enunciation, so if she’s still doing that in the battles, she’ll probably get told.
I was looking at the episode recap this morning and apparently Brittney Lawrence didn’t get stolen. I had the impression there was a steal for all three battles. <shrug> I guess my attention wandered for a moment.
Chelsea vs Kata “I’m the Only One” - WTF? I thought that Chelsea was noticeably better than Kata. To be honest, I didn’t really care for Kata’s performance.
Hannah vs Maya “Elastic Heart” - I liked Maya better, and so did the other judges it seems, so I wonder why Pharrell went with Hannah. At least Maya got saved.
