The Voice [Season 2, Spring 2012]

I totally thought James Massone was Lindsay Paveo during “Dancing in the Streets” tonight. :smack:

Bummed about James going home tonight. Love that guy. Hope he is “a star” like RaeLynn, cuz I really want to hear him sing again.

Overall, things seemed pretty fair tonight. It may have been the best episode of the show yet. The energy was good.

I’m on the west coast so I just got a spoiler.

Something just hit me. Do the singers get paid whenever someone downloads their performance from iTunes? I could totally see the execs screwing them out of payments with excuses like, “Your payment is the exposure that you’re getting.” Or something like that. But, maybe not.

OK, now that the final performance is over, here are my opinions.

Adam
[ol]
[li]Katrina - “Jar of Hearts” - I normally hate this song, but I enjoyed this rendetion.[/li][li]Mathai - “I’m Like a Bird” - Sucked. She needs singing lessons.[/li][li]Tony - “Baby One More Time” - Cringworthy song choice. Not sung too badly though.[/li][li]Pip - “Somewhere Only We Know” - Pretty good. Something about his performance could have been better, but I can’t put my finger on it.[/li][/ol]

Cee Lo
[ol]
[li]Jamar - “It’s My Life” - Hard to divorce myself from the orgional, but he did sing it well.[/li][li]James - “Just the Way You Are” - Just a little too high pitched for my taste. Could be a better if he sang it a little deeper and with a little power.[/li][li]Cheesa - “I Have Nothing” - I Loved it.[/li][li]Juliette - “Cryin’” - Horrible. Better than Mathai though.[/li][/ol]

My Ranking

[li]Cheesa[/li][li]Katrina[/li][li]Pip[/li][li]Jamar[/li][li]James[/li][li]Tony[/li][li]Juliette[/li][li]Mathai[/li][/ol]

I’m a little surprised the guys on both teams made it through.

At any rate, Mathai actually sounded fairly decent tonight. I still think that Katrina did better though.

Who got cut last night?

Adam cut Mattai last night, and CeeLo cut Cheesa. Amen and hallelujah. Mattai really does need a couple of years of training and Cheesa isn’t bad, but she’s boring.

I can’t say I found anyone exactly thrilling on Monday. Katrina and Jamar did decent renditions of songs I don’t like. Mattai chirped. Cheesa belted and made stiff and awkward arm movements. Pip was okay, I feel like it kinda fell apart once he stood up. Poor Juliet. Terrible song, terribly uncomfortable performance. What did they do to that girl? As she stood waiting to find out on Tuesday whether CeeLo would save her, I’m sure she was thinking “I let you bleach my hair you bitches!”

I liked Tony’s version of Baby One More Time. It’s nice hearing someone that can actually sing in tune do that song.

Jamar has been the biggest surprise for me this season. I never thought he’d do this well. This guy is really stepping up as we head to the semi-finals.

I’m seeing a lot of growth and confidence in Katrina. She’s really transformed during the run of this show. I’m beginning to believe she could have a professional career.

Glad to see Juliet Simms another week. The choice between Juliet and Cheesa seemed the closest and hardest. I just see more creativity and orginality in Juliet. She really makes these songs her own.

recap of this weeks show.

Finally got to catch up on this week.

  1. Katrina, Jar of Hearts. I like the song. I liked her rendition of this song. I’m coming around to her performances. She is showing improvement here.

  2. Mathai, I’m Like a Bird. Not great.

  3. Tony, Hit Me Baby. I kinda like the song. I loved the “in your face” move. I liked his version. I enjoy his ability.

  4. Pip, Somewhere Only We Know. It was okay, but like Nobody said, it lacked something, and went a little off near the end.

  5. Jamar, It’s My Life. Never cared for the song, but could see how it fit for him. He did great with the performance. He’s a contender.

  6. James, Just the Way You Are. This is a simple song, it was a simple performance, not over the top bombast and production. He was smooth and elegant and hit all the notes. I thought it was a good performance.

  7. Cheesa (CheesyBaby), I Have Nothing. Excellent. She finally got me to get past her win over Angie. The song choice was great, she belted it out, she hit the notes, and it was great.

  8. Juliette,* Cryin’*. I liked it. She can sing, and she pours her heart into it.

This episode had some really great performances. This made it really tough to pick the losers. Adam could have picked Mathai or Pip in my mind, but I see why he picked Pip. Pip just hasn’t quite managed to get that thing in his performances. He’s okay, but lacking something. Maybe it’s edge, maybe it’s focus, maybe it’s something else.

Cee Lo had a tough choice. Three awesome performances and one pretty good one. He had to send James Massone home, but it wasn’t a bad job.

Then we had night 2, the last chance songs.

Audience saves of Tony and Jamar. I’m happy the audience picked Tony. With Cee Lo’s team, it was so close on those three that I can’t argue. That put us to the performances.

Mathai sang Cowboy Casanova, and I’ve got to say, she finally did something that didn’t suck. I was impressed, mostly because compared to her previous works, this was adequate.

But then Katrina came out with Perfect, and did another steller performance. I’m really getting the groove from her, so this was a no brainer call, keep Katrina. But it’s ironic that Mathai had to lose on that performance, given all her previous wins.

Juliette Simms surprised again, coming out with Natalie Imbruglia’s Torn, in a different rendition that wasn’t the hard rock we expected from Juliette. I liked it, though Christina commented that her softer voice like at the beginning wasn’t the best showcase for her, and wanted to see another thing like her Roxanne performance. Well hell yeah, she pulls another one of those and she really could win.

Cheesa followed that with Already Gone, and was just a bit flat through most of the song. So much build up from the prior hit, so much let down with this one. Yeah, gotta go with Juliette over Cheesa.

Outta these four, it’s hard to guess who will win. I think it’s anybody’s to win, but my faves are Tony Lucca and Juliette Simms. But I think Jamar is probably in a stronger position than Tony to win. Kristina isn’t out of the running, but she’s not my fave.

The other four include Chris Mann, Lindsay Pavao, Jermaine Paul, and Erin Willett. I like Jermaine Paul best, but can see all four competing well. Not that I care for Lindsay, but somebody does. I think most likely wins, in this order

Jamar
Juliette
Jermaine
Tony
Chris
Kristina
Erin
Lindsay

Audience votes are going to play a big role, of course.

For the life of me I cannot figure out why I do not like Tony at all.

I guess Chris has given up all pretense of switching to pop.

My personal opinion.

Adam
Tony - “How Do You Like Me Now” - 7 / 10
Katrina - “Killing Me Softly” - 9 / 10

Blake
Erin - “Without You” - 5 / 10
Jermaine - “Open Arms” - 6 / 10

Christina
Chris - “Ave Maria” - 9 / 10
Lindsey - “Skinny Love” - 7.5 / 10

Cee Lo
Jamar - “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” - 9.5 / 10
Juliet - “Man’s World” - 10 / 10

I feel the same way about Tony. He comes across as cocky in a certain unlovable way. He lacks charisma. And his voice really isn’t that great. Christina was right when she called him “very one-dimensional.”

The people I’d like to see in the finals are Katrina, Juliette, Jermaine, and Lindsey. I think Juliette deserves to win, but Jamar would be a fair win too.

One kinda dumb thing about the show is that each coach is guaranteed a “team” member in the finals (scare quotes around “team” because they are not really teams–they are more like conferences in which everyone is competing against each other). E.g., I think Jamar and Juliette are the two best people remaining, but they can’t compete against each other in the finals, since they are on the same “team.”

I wonder if they weigh the votes differently. Like, if itunes sales are more important than call-in votes (which would make sense if they were). Simms is number six for single sales today.

I also agree that it sucks hard that Jamar and Juliette can’t both go to the finals, they’re far and away my favorites. C’mon, The Voice, do a wacky, shocking, ratings-grabbing rules change! Overall my preference is for Jamar, but it’s not like I can be mad if it’s Juliette. Jamar is more consistent and I just really love his voice; Juliette is more inclined to stumble a bit, but when she hits it, she hits it out of the park and past the lot and it’s something special.

And now onto the rest of them, none of whom have the remotest chance of winning, but just for funsies:

I like Tony just fine, and I think he’s an okay performer, but he has no business amongst these people as a singer. Every one of the other semi-finalists (with the possible exception of Lindsey) could wipe the floor with him vocally. If he beats Katrina into the finals, I’m going to be completely disgusted.

I don’t care whether Lindsey or Chris Mann advances, I don’t like either of them. I prefer Erin to Jermaine (take what Aeschines said about Tony, and that’s how I feel about Jermaine. He has a better voice than Tony of course, but I hate the oversinging, so it just exacerbates everything else that annoys me about him).

Damn. DAMN DAMN DAMN! Why do Jamar and Juliette have to be on the same “team”? That sucks big green donkey balls.

My pre results rundown:

I like Tony, I want to root for him, but that performance didn’t work for me. He didn’t do anything wrong, but that’s not my music style, not a song choice I cared for. It just didn’t do anything for me.

Katrina did a great job. That was a great song (though I woulda liked Roberta Flack’s version), and she did well. She’s toned down the oddities and put in just enough to color the sound without overwhelming it. My one complaint about her - during their group performance, she actually hurt my ears. Those notes weren’t right. But on the song that matters, the performance that counts, she was better than her competitor (Tony).

Erin, I was not impressed. I could tell she was singing with emotion, but some of the notes just seemed wrong, like they needed to be higher, and it just didn’t connect for me.

Jermaine came in with Open Arms and I thought he did great. That was one of the better performances of the night.

Chris doing Ave Maria - well, it was opera. I can’t fault the performance, and it sounded fine to me, but I don’t know opera so it’s not like I have much point of comparison. And while it definitely showcased his ability, I find myself wondering if America is going to connect to opera enough for him to win. There’s a reason that opera is not pop music.

Lindsay did okay, and this definitely put the best spin on her performance, closest to who she is. But I’m still meh about her.

Jamar had a fabulous performance. I love that he took the song a little more mellow to show he can do it, I love that he twisted it to suit where he wants to go with his music, to show his stylings and intent. That is where the artist brings forth what they are going to be musically, so you can really see what you are voting for. It’s like Dee last year, where she was the most creative and talented with doing what she wanted. And he sounded great, and he really felt the song. It was a great performance, only marred by the fact that I have to pick between him and Juliette tonight. DAMN!

Juliette - I’ve been rooting for her from the get go, and she found another Roxanne like Christina suggested. I was trying to come up with songs for her to sing. They have to have emotion and power to bring out her best side. Janis Joplin’s Piece of My Heart is an obvious choice, but perhaps too obvious. Then I thought something by Heart, like If Looks Could Kill, or maybe an Avril song. Then Madonna’s Crazy For You came on the radio, and I thought that would be a pretty good one. And I realized something by Pat Benetar would be a decent choice. But even though I’ve never heard the song she sang before, it was an awesome performance. I LOVED it. I agree with Adam, her’s was the one to beat. I’m hoping all the “last peformance = freshest in memory” vibe works in her favor, because I so want her to win.

Not that I’ll be tremendously upset if Jamar wins, because he’s a solid performer and has a great voice.

I have to point out once again because it is really beginning to stand out just how much I hate when they take a song I know well and love and cut a line or two to edit the time. THAT SUCKS! It takes me out of the performance as I have to skip a beat to get to the right part of the song. Like listening to an old record with a skip in it. And all they have to do is cut out one of those extraneous performances, or the stupid backstage/web stuff, and they’d have time for the competitors to sing their whole song.

AMEN! They routinely say how the coaches are competing against each other, and how these are teams, but the reality is that the coaches are only competing against each other during the blind auditions for picking their “team members”, and in the final show when the four contestants battle head to head. All other rounds the competition is between their own team members. Lindsay wasn’t competing against Jermaine or Jamar or Juliette tonight, she was competing against Chris Mann, and only Chris Mann. Sure, her performance affects the audience’s overall opinion of her and may contribute to the finalist round of voting, if she’s in that, but last night it was only the two of them head to head, nobody else’s performance affects their result. One of them will go home, and one will stay. Even if I’d trade both of them to ensure I had Jamar and Juliette in the finals.

It’s funny. I don’t remember why, but I looked up Juliet Simms and found a Wikipedia article

She’s not exactly an amateur, although to be honest I haven’t been crazy about her until last night.

Christina did the right thing going 50/50. It sucks that Chris Mann won, though. Yes, great opera singer. Could be the next Josh Groban. Like a give a f*** about the next Josh Groban. Is Chris gonna win? No effin way.

Adam, you ass. Had you voted 50/50, Katrina would have won–and she deserved it. Tony Lucca sucks. Or rather, he annoys me. Is Tony gonna win? Methinks NOT.

What the hell was that thing with Cindi Lauper?!

Javier’s song is generic CRAPOLA.

Jermaine is the finalist for team Blake. No DUH. Blake is classy with his 50/50. Erin had no chance, she had no charisma, she should be happy she made it thus far.

Holy shit! Cee Lo gave Juliet 60 points! Well, she’s gonna win now. And she has won (looks like she might have won anyway). And she’s gonna win The Voice–guaranteed.

Well… that went utterly and entirely wrong. I’m not sure I can even be bothered to watch next week. I wish Juliette luck (not that she’ll need it) but the other three leave me completely cold.

Nobody, almost no one on this show has no professional experience, and a number of them have been previously signed.
