The Voice, Season 5

I’m watching on the West coast, so right now One Republic just finished performing. Before that, when Tess sang with Celine, one of my wife’s caregiver’s had no idea who she is. I mentioned “My Heart Will Go On” from Titanic and got a blank stare. This lady is 50 by the way, not a kid who never heard of Celine or Titanic because she’s too young.

Congrats to Tessanne. I think she deserved it. And I was shocked they’d ask her to sing after such an emotional moment, but she handled it well.

Also, when I saw a commercial for the upcoming season I was surprised that Adam and Blake will be there. I thought they were rotating out for Shakira and Usher.

I called it! Will was third, Tessanne won.

That’s one thing I never understood. They just won, they’re emotional and celebrating and all hyped up - quick, sing! They’ve been doing that since the first show. I think they’re copying American Idol that way - they had Kelly Clarkson singing her song after winning, too. Boggles my mind.

At least this time the intent is part of their promotional push. They got someone to write an original song and they’re going to be hitting the efforts in January to roll with the momentum. That is one thing where the Voice has not done well, getting their winners (or other contestants) the visibility that American Idol has consistently done. I think they’re finally making strides, with Cassidy Pope’s song getting on the radio, and Danielle Bradberry getting the Olympics nod. Having an original song ready to go and getting it released quickly is an attempt to keep it rolling.

So far, it’s been Cee Lo and Christina doing all the rotating. I hadn’t heard either of the winners wanted a break.

It might be that the massive success of Philip Phillips’ “Home” has got everyone thinking about the profit to be had from an original song they control.

That’s been contracted and announced since the end of season 4. I was actually surprised when you noted that Blake and Adam were taking a break, earlier in the thread. I hadn’t seen any kind of announcement on that.

I think it’s worse that they’re making it a new song because that adds pressure to the whole thing. And they’re not singing their best, so it doesn’t help the song any. I don’t feel like it adds much to the show. It makes the end feel uncomfortable for everyone.

A few months ago there was a Vicci Martinez single that had Cee-Lo in it
Come Along

I could have sworn I heard that the second time around Adam and Blake wold be off for the season. Oh well, whatever.

Wow, that’s kinda catchy. But what’s all that powder they’re throwing around? Almost looks like the video is suggesting cocaine is the way to be free. Especially the red cocaine.

 I think it’s just there for mood or atmosphere. I don’t think it actually means anything.

Actually though, thinking about Cee-Lo, I don’t think he’ll win any season any time soon. His preference for unique voices is just a touch too out there. He has a habit of forcing song styles on artists who can’t pull them off. And once people are on his team he doesn’t seem as enthusiastic about them as the other judges are about their own contestants. If I had a great singing voice and went on the show he’d probably be my last pick for a coach. Adam would be my first.

I think Cee Lo tries to force his artists too much, and I think he picks bad songs, and he’s a big production number guy. Apparently America doesn’t like that so much. Look at who they vote down - Kat, and the James when he was doing that Queen song.

I haven’t seen him not enthusiastic about his people, and he clearly still supports Vicki from season 1.

I don’t think he would be my choice for a coach. Blake, interestingly, has one three times with different styles, and he’s made some good observations. I’d probably feel most stylistically in tune with Adam, and he gets excited by his folks. The downside with Adam is occassionally his song choices are things I wouldn’t want to sing - lyrically, not necessarily melodically.

Christina knows singing well and coaches by demonstrating what she wants to hear. I doubt I’d fit what she’s looking for.

Adam would be the closest to my style. Blake, being a country artist, emphasizes country just a little too much for his non country singers, and there’s something kind of off-putting about Christina. Although I would choose her over Cee-Lo.
