One thing that’s not been explained is how the disease spread in the first place. We know it’s gone international from the CDC doctor, but we also know the longest incubation period is 24 hours. If the contagion has to be spread by body fluid intake (not just being in the area) then it’s a question of how it would have gotten out of control.
I can see that there might have been multiple situations of hospitals taking in sick people and becoming centers of infestation, but if they got so far as to nuke Atlanta from orbit (it’s the only way to be sure) that the military would have long since gotten to the point of taking out every hospital they came accross.
While I really like this show, I think that’s the one thing that bugs me about it. Two seasons in, I still don’t know what the ground rules are for this world.
You probably never will, the series is supposed to be about how the people change and deal with the world they are in, and what they face. The whole “undead walking the earth” thing is just an obstacle they need to overcome.
I think he has slowly been running out of arrows since season 1, and is now down to just the 1. Gonna need to find a hardware store or a sporting goods shop soon.
I honestly have no idea, would a cross bow like that need special arrows/bolts made for it?
It seems like the length is quite a bit shorter.
Still, I think I’d have asked Maggie and Glenn to check the stores in town, if I were him.
Maybe when he’s reduced to shooting asparagus spears it will dawn on him to get more bolts. And yeah, they’re made specifically for that type of weapon. While they’re at it, they could trade in the 20-year old vehicles and that 40-year old RV for some newer iron and a 42-foot Pegasus motor home.
I’m interested to see what happens next episode. Obviously the zombies in the barn escape. But how? The Maggies says to Glenn something to the effect of “don’t tell anyone else in your group” which means that the banging on the barn door must have subsided. If so, they’ve gone back to dormant and are just milling around which seems to be a perfectly safe containment system if the past week is any indication. There’s also no need to kill these zombies because this group doesn’t make a habit of killing every single zombie they happen to run up against. Often running away is a better option. If they feel they’re unsafe at the farm, they can always move on…which is exactly what Herschel wants them to do anyway.
Basically that’s a long way of saying I can’t think of a single reason why the zombies escape short of gross stupidity and incompetence within the group.
I’m not sure how readily available crossbow bolts are in sporting goods stores (I suppose I should get up to speed on that, for when the Walkers move into MY neighborhood), but I can certainly see him switching to a traditional bow and arrow in the near future.
Or learning to make new bolts from salvaged materials. Also, if they do find a source for new bolts, there’s pretty likely a bunch of new crossbows and bows as well. Let everyone learn to use THOSE. You can practice on them quietly and retrieve your ammo if you set up your range correctly.
His crossbow uses arrows rather than the traditional bolts, as shown by the fact that they have fletching (feathers), bolts don’t have them. They’re just short arrows, so they shouldn’t be too hard to find, adapt from longer ones or make from scratch. He’s not using his crossbow for long range shots, so accuracy isn’t much of an issue.
Say what, now? I thought all crossbow bolts had fletching, to stabilize the flight of the bolt. No?
Anyway, you should be able to grab a bunch of dowels at any hardware store, from which you could make your own bolts. Eventually, you’ll want a lathe to make your own dowels.
It’s…complicated, but mostly boils down to me being pedantic. Sorry.
Modern crossbow bolts are thicker and heavier than equivalent length arrows, but not so much that using cut-down arrows wouldn’t work. Especially considering that Daryl’s crossbow is a relatively lightweight and low-powered example (that model, a Horton Scout HD 125, is designed for youth and female users). Likewise, making new ones from salvaged materials wouldn’t be too difficult.
Also, I’d think it unlikely that he’d switch to a traditional bow. History shows that crossbows are far easier to use effectively.
I’m guessing that Glen will have to screw up and reveal the pregnancy. At the rate of 1 day per episode, would she even be showing by the end of season 3? It wouldn’t be too hard to keep it under wraps. There should be plenty of excuses for being sick given their situation.
Why am I more interested in watching Daryl climb up a hill (twice) than Lori’s pregnancy, who’s the baby daddy, and the missing Sophia?
At first, I was condemning Andrea for taking that shot, then I realized 1) Shane was probably her fire arms instructor and didn’t bother with firearms safety and 2) Dale had just told her not to.
Dale is a sanctimonious, self righteous, bossy, scolding twit. If Dale had told me not to poke my own eye out, I’d probably consider doing it just to spite him. He scolded Glenn for having sex with Maggie because Glen didn’t think of the good of the group? I know there could be fall out if Herschel finds out, but what young kid thinks of “the good of the group” when they’re to have sex during a zombie apocalypse?
I’m now resigned to the fact that Sofia will be missing for the rest of the season. I get that the writers want to bring in the issue of staying for one member vs. leaving, but they really can’t leave until Carl is recovered anyway. Didn’t he just have major surgery a day ago or so? (I can’t keep track of how much time has passed on this show).
Good call on the dowels. I was wondering - if they had to start making arrows/bolts - how they would make sure the bolts were balanced correctly. In my experience with bows (which I readily admit is fairly minor), one that isn’t balanced right throws off the shot, at least slightly.
I agree wholeheartedly with this post. The dumbest line of the show was Dale’s “What were you thinking?” to Glenn. I wanted Glenn to say, “I don’t know, that I’m 20 years old and haven’t seen a non-rotting woman in weeks?”
Unfortunately, it has only just recently become clear that Sophia missing is simply a plot device to keep the group on Herschel’s farm for the duration of Season 2. Full stop. We can stop caring about what happens to her, because her plot line simply exists to keep down filming costs.
