I watched season 1 of the walking dead a few years ago with some friends. It seemed pretty good at the time, but we were mostly drinking beer and bullshitting and so our standards were not that high.
I have been watching Season 2 on Netflix. I am up to episode 4. So far, this season is boring and tedious. I am watching a bunch of stupid, dirty, tired, whiny people talking slowly in southern accents, looking sad, complaining, sighing, sweating, and occasionally doing completely boneheaded things to advance the “plot”. There are occasionally zombies, but they’re not especially threatening, and it really isn’t all that entertaining to watch a bunch of hicks decide “How should we kill this zombie we found?” for the fifth time.
I’d say no. I gave up on the show during season two and friends have suggested, as here, that season three got better. Having dipped my toe, I disagree, and I haven’t bothered since.
I have been watching episode 5 while reading other posts on the SDMB. So far, the most interesting thing that’s happened is the big stupid obnoxious hick fell off his horse, and had a vision of his big stupid obnoxious hick brother. Then a few zombies showed up, and he killed the zombies. They might as well have been rabid raccoons for all the threat they posed.
Back at the farm, it is a bunch of stupid, miserable, dirty, sweaty people being unhappy at each other in various ways that manage to consume a lot of time without advancing the plot one fucking inch.
EDIT: Oh great, big stupid obnoxious hick got shot. Not bad enough to kill the big stupid obnoxious hick, but likely enough to guarantee the next 10 minutes consists of everyone whining about how the stupid woman should not have shot him.
I gave up and never watched the second half of Season 2. But I picked it up again for Season 3, with the promise of it being much improved. But I am now going to give up on it again.
I’ve never been a fan of Zombie movies in the first place, so that side of things doesn’t satiate me in any way.
There have been a hell of a lot of post-apocalyptic shows in the last few years, and they’re getting a bit samey.
There are no likeable characters; they’re all miserable, stupid, or megalomaniacal. In fact most of TV has gotten this way lately, where in order to make an interesting character they’ve made them as ambiguously edgy and dark, and consequently as irritating, as possible. I like fun cheerful and charismatic characters, not miserable killers and angry drug addicts.
So I will pass on the show from now onward and find something a bit more upbeat to entertain me.
That might partially explain why you loved it so much and most of the rest of us didn’t like season 2. For you, they were standing around the farm for two or so days. For me, they were standing around the farm for four months. It was brutal.
I DVRed the marathon this weekend and have gone through season one and half of season two. I think the zombie aspect is very well done. They look good, for zombies, and it’s interesting to see the different ways characters react to they way the world has changed. But yeah, I have yelled “YOU GUYS ARE FUCKING IDIOTS!!” about once per episode along with a few “DON’T GO IN THEREs!” and some sarcastic “Let’s split ups.” Far to many poor decisions and too much handwringing. I’m hoping later seasons will follow a more rational group of people or natural selection will kill off the idiots.
Have you met my friend, Daryl? He is none of those things. He’s clearly the most competent of the group, he probably doesn’t need them to survive, but he knows they need him, so he sticks around. He’s not an asshole, could clearly use force to be “the new Rick,” but doesn’t because it’s not his thing.
Really, the worst thing you could say about him is his brother was an asshole.
