Michigan Muslims Feel Sectarian Ripples

In Dearborn, Mich., the nation’s largest Arab-American community, Shia and Sunnis have long lived together mostly peacefully. But it appears that some of Iraq’s sectarian violence is being mirrored in the Detroit area, particularly in recent months. As the Muslim communities have grown and prospered, more mosques have been built and some of the divides between these sects have been brought into sharper focus.

The report states up front that officials do not think that this is a mirror of sectarian violence happening in Iraq, but nonetheless, this is not a good thing. Is this a sign of things to come, or will this eventually die down? Are we in for a proliferation of violence between Muslims at home?

Are we in for a proliferation of violence between Muslims at home?

I highly doubt it, though I suppose its possible we could have SOME violence between the two sects here. For the most part (from my own experience of course), Muslims in the US integrate into our society the same as every other immigrant. Much more (again in my own more limited experience) than in parts of Europe even…and by buying into and integrating with our society much of the need for that kind of sectarian violence goes out the air lock.

Thats not to say we might not get some fairly active protests or rallies…but unless some outside party comes in and sparks a cycle of violence I don’t see that happening here.

I guess time will tell.

MAybe, but I doubt it. We haven’t seen violence between the Indian-American and Pakistani-American populations, for instance, despite a much sharper and longer history.
