Maybe that’s like dating advice… people still give and follow dating advice that doesn’t involve proper scientific testing. BTW I once did an assignment where I explored studies involving sugar sweetened beverages. Some said that people having them gained weight - others didn’t. So it wasn’t conclusive that they cause weight gain but it doesn’t mean that people shouldn’t have the opinion that they should be minimized in the diet.
But only the ones who were moms.
More about what the Renegade Diet ebook says about why it might not work:

It is counter-intuitive… but I guess it is based on something.
- Reduce your calorie intake until you start losing weight. If you lose weight too fast, raise your calorie count. If weight loss plateaus before you hit your target weight, reduce your calorie intake until you start losing weight. If you hit a calorie intake that plateaus you at your desired weight, continue eating like that until your weight changes again (due to age, disease, etc.) and adjust accordingly, otherwise congratulations keep doing that.
- Get all your vitamins
- Get enough fiber
- Target around 12-20% body fat.
- Get cardiovascular exercise, since it’s just as (if not more) relevant to your long-term health than the size of your love handles.
- Stop reading diet books.
But I guess you want me to read your diet advice.
What’s that? A caveat that it may not work for a small percentage of the population; a small percentage that just happens to include you??? I am shocked, shocked I say!
Since all diet advice that is known to man can’t even fill a page (ignoring charts of what “enough vitamins” means in specific), there’s not much money in publishing it.
Basically, I don’t care what you do nor, I think, did any of the other few posters who bothered posting to this running stream of consciousness thread. But the website is dedicated to fighting ignorance. So in the interest of fighting ignorance, the rules I stated before are, as said, the actual rules of diet and health as we (the human race) actually understand them.
Based on what others have written, my expectation was and is that you won’t pay any attention, but it seemed worth pointing out the simple truth, for any lurkers who might be headed down some weird path.
Just because you keep insisting that the before and after pics MUST mean that the diet is effective: 5 Insane Realities Behind the Scenes of a Weight Loss Ad | Cracked.com
“all diet advice that is known to man”? Well here is just some of the diet advice from the Renegade diet…
and it is more than a single page…
Then there is a lot of other diet advice…
Well if you believe that “all diet advice that is known to man can’t even fill a page” then that’s ignorance.
So you think you’ve summed up the training of a nutritionist in a couple of lines?
I’m talking about before and after pics that aren’t photoshopped, etc. And I mean the diet MAY be effective.
Including “Stop reading diet books”? Is that a part of what nutritionists do to learn to be nutritionists?
What if the person wants well-defined muscles? Oh I guess they’re wrong then since your diet rules are “pointing out the simple truth”.
I keep coming back to JC’s various threads out of sheer train-wreck fascination. In his thread about his fast, I suggested that he talk to a nutritionist as well as his doctor. His response was
Since his “research” appears to be simply reading diet books and looking at before and after photos on the internet (Seriously, JohnClay, have you never heard of Photoshop?), and he’s talked about fasting in each of the three threads he’s started, and he’s made comments like this:
and this, which really set off the alarm bells:
I suspect his interest in fasting and diet are motivated by something other than simple physical health.
Well I’m talking about my experiences with diet. In time I’ll see how effective it has been in losing belly fat.
And I accept what most of the objections were about - that it isn’t a mainstream body builder’s diet or that the liver doesn’t really need a rest.
Yes it is about getting a flat stomach. It is a cosmetic thing. Though the Renegade diet has a major focus on health which has caused me to eat more healthily. (avoiding processed foods, eating organic things, etc - well I haven’t been following the organic food advice)
Well one out of two isn’t bad. BTW sometimes it takes a while to change my mind… I suspect seeing a nutritionist may be relatively expensive (my doctor is free and my 3 psychiatric medications are less than $10/month). It is similar to another thread - a guy said I should set an example for the weight loss of a woman I know. I ended up doing that. So as far as a nutritionist is concerned I think I’ll look into that. My flatmate has seen a nutritionist though he is very overweight and has borderline diabetes. If a nutritionist is more than $50 I might not see them.
I’m also trying out the diets to see how well they work for me. Well I’m trying some aspects of the diets - so far I haven’t been having all the suggested supplements and eating organic food, etc.
There are also long testimonials including some from well-known people (not just nobodies) and magazines.
BTW as far as anorexics go I’m limiting my fasts to 16 hours so they aren’t relevant.
As far as ignoring people goes remember the first part of this post:
http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=17766278&postcount=93
I suspect people in this thread mostly haven’t tried out these IF diets for themselves…
except for one guy:

Actually I’ve heard they take the after pix first & then eat pickles, chips, & other high salt foods to retain water & bloat up for the before picture. But, yeah, that’s a very minor nit pick.
As well as testimonies on the diet’s websites there’s also this:
Six years worth of comments on a neutral site so they haven’t removed any non-glowing comments.
As far as photoshop goes, do you think they added fat to the before pics and/or added muscle to the after pics?
http://www.renegadedietbook.com/
- Have muscles.
- Target 8-10% body fat, but expect to have shortened your life (slightly).
8% is pretty low, but according to that you want to be around 30% to have the biggest genitals, and they shrink substantially the leaner you get.
Today I noticed that my face is looking thinner - my temples and cheeks are indented and are looking bony. I want to lose stubborn belly fat NOT face fat…
