Yes. Is the verb form of the verb a new thing?
Per m-w.com, the noun form dates to 1735, while the verb’s first known use was circa 1806. So it doesn’t appear to be a recent innovation.
Man, that article is sad.
In other news, I attempted a Schadenfreude Pie last night. It didn’t turn out too well. The filling failed to gel completely - maybe due to overfilling the pie shell. Anyway, the very edges, where the filling soaked into the crust and baked until chewy was pretty tasty. But make sure you like molasses before making - molasses flavor overpowers everything else.
Meantime, Gaudio wrote on her blog Tuesday that the most recent posting on the Cooks Source website paints her as “a big meanie” and that she would be happy to post all of her email exchanges with Griggs in full with Griggs’ permission.
Doesnt she get it yet, she doesnt need permission…
You cut and pasted ‘Schadenfreude Pie’ from my previous posting.
I require compensation in the form of a Schadenfreude Pie delivered fresh to my home.
By the way, Gaudio’s emails are here.
She makes one slightly snarky comment but nothing anyone should have been too rattled about (especially anyone professional dealing with the public as a professional representative of a professionally run organization professional professional…). Gaudio’s three emails were almost completely and totally to-the-point and bloodless, exactly as they should have been.
As I said before, there is nothing linguistically wrong with “copyrighted,” but under the Berne Convention, to which the United States is a party and which the U.S. Copyright Act complies with, using “copyrighted” is misleading, because it implies that a creator has to take positive action in order to benefit from the protections of copyright law. This is false. A creative, original work is protected by copyright law as soon as it is fixed in a perceivable medium.
Using the term “copyrighted” leads to statements based in misconception such as “I didn’t know it was copyrighted.” The way the Berne Convention works, if it’s an original, creative work, it’s automatically copyrighted.
That’s one of the reasons that people who understand copyright law use phrases such as “protected by copyright law” instead of “copyrighted.”
It’s not grammatically wrong, but under current law it’s (kind of) wrong conceptually.
Honestly, Projammer, I have been baking pies for 30 years, and you should just be thankful I didn’t come to your house and “lift” the ingredients for the pie from your pantry. It happens a lot, clearly more than you are aware of, especially on college campuses, and the workplace. I took some time to make changes, omitting cinnamon and using instant coffee in place of liqueur, you should compensate me!
Brava! (Was the cinnamon unauthorized?)
Thanks - funnily enough, the cinnamon is unauthorized, because I have a friend who is allergic. And she became my friend *after *I chose my username!
You know, I always thought it was a Deadwood reference…
Looks like it’s all over but the whimpering now.
The website is just the generic placeholder of the hosting company.
Does anyone think Griggs will ever admit that the whole fiasco was her own fault?
Nnnnnnnnnnnnnope.
