The Wii Fit Thread

I think it’s ben measureably good for my posture and balance even in a week or so. My shoes drag less and I feel very poised. This could be just placebo, I have no idea. But it seems to be working.

I continue to do other things to keep fit, including biking to work and strength exercises and swimming at the gym. I don’t think it’s a one-stop shop, but I have never seen anything so efficient at teaching poise and balance, especially unaccompanied in your own house.

I also think the balance games are rather good.

Thanks for the responses. It’s nice to hear that you haven’t lost interest. I’m planning on getting it if Best Buy will ever get another copy (I have a gift card I want to use on it, so I’m stuck getting it there  )

I’m going to completely agree with Slacker’s comments, with the exception of being in the 100 degree Arizona heat. The free step does make it easy to get in that extra time - I’ve been averaging an hour of “game play” each day since I got it, with 30-45 minutes of that being aerobic, the rest yoga/strength.

The tracking is very helpful for me, partly because I hate the scale I own, and partly because the graphing is just very useful for me. It’d be nice if I could email/print it out for a set period of time to take in for doctors visits and the like, instead of estimates.

And I’m showing down about 5 pounds since starting 2 weeks ago, which is not bad, considering it usually takes me a while to start losing - typically I see things in ~3 weeks, but not sooner. I know, there’s some fluctuation naturally, but it helps motivate me to see a difference, especially since I’m at the point I’d usually be bloating more.

Is the scale feature accurate for everyone else? It seems to be registering maybe 8 lbs light (consistently) for me, but perhaps that’s because we have it set on carpeting.

I still like it - I didn’t exercise yesterday or today due to migraines, but I’ve done a body test every day at least. On the other days, I try for 30 minutes of activities. That advanced step class is tough! I haven’t unlocked everything, not by a long shot.

The feedback is part of the motivation - I know my trainer will be very disappointed when I don’t exercise for a week because I’m going on vacation!

Are you using the little feet that came with it? They are supposed to help on the carpet. Mine seems pretty accurate.

… I thought they were replacements or something. Are you supposed to jam them over the current feet? I tried that and they fell off, but now they seem to have stayed on.

I hope mine’s not 8 pounds light! I use the little foot extenders as well, since my carpet’s thick enough that the bottom would touch (you want to avoid that, because it does apparently, affect weight readings).
Has anyone else started it up to be greeted by the other trainer - one day last week when I started up my first yoga pose, it was the man instead of the woman and it said something about he would be starting with me today (like she was too lazy to get up at 5:30 or something!), but after that pose, it was the woman.

And I’ll be gone for about a week too, for a conference soon. I know I’ll get scolded when I get back!

I’m already on a training regimen and I don’t think I could use it without overtraining, but it sounds like my wife would love it. Plus, I would have a Wii, so everybody wins!

I’ve heard what really matters is that you use the same scale to weigh yourself, so that you can get an idea of fluctuations and your general trend, moreso than the actual pounds weighed. That being said, I just used the bathroom scale to weigh myself again - and I weigh less than I thought! The Fit was only 4 lbs or so off without the extra feet, and is now (with feet installed and a second Body Test done to check) within a pound of what the bathroom scale says. The bathroom scale is old so it may well be the inaccurate one.

Well, I have finally been able to Fit! I had to lose about 8 pounds or so, before it finally let me step on.

For the record, I also am using the foot extenders… the Wii Fit weighs me more or less the same as my bathroom scale. (Within a pound or two, but I figure given various states of dress/time of day/eating habits between the two… they are basically the same)

I am really quite enjoying it. I never in a million years thought that I would be doing Yoga. But there I was this morning saluting the sun.

The one thing that has become apparant, I had knee surgery about 17 months ago, and my left leg is now MUCH MUCH stronger than my right (surgical) leg. It’s not something you’d really notice walking around, but doing some of the exercises my left leg will get a decent score and my right leg, like 5.

My plan is to use the fit to even out the strength difference in the two legs, improve my overall balance and posture, and hopefully get some exercise on days I’m not able to make it to the gym.

I started about three weeks ago, and it’s been… awesome, really. The new has pretty much worn off, but the results have been marked enough that I’m continuing to use it and enjoy using it. Now, grant you, it’s definitely a “you get out of it what you put into it” thing - if I didn’t push myself to get a good stretch or add free weights to some of the exercises, I would’ve plateaued on usefulness even before the three-week mark. But, as it is, here are some of the things it’s helped with:

  • I can touch my toes again
  • I can stand on one foot for more than five seconds without falling over again
  • I can chase Robin around the house much more effectively for more than thirty seconds without getting winded again
  • I can damn near do a real pushup (heh) again

Realistically speaking, I will probably continue to use it for at least another couple of months, or until I find another tool that gives me the same or similar benefits at a comparable convenience level. And, frankly, even if I get motivated enough to start taking classes, it’s gonna be pretty hard to beat the convenience of yoga in my underwear at whatever the hell time I feel like.

My results haven’t been as marked as A Priori Tea’s, but there are aspects that I know will take slightly longer with my body.

I have to keep reminding myself that I don’t lose weight easily - I have to fight for every pound and I rarely see any kind of consistent weight loss until after the 3 week mark, but I also know that the 40 minutes of aerobic, 20 minutes of yoga/strength per day will add up and start working eventually.

That said, I’m noticing muscle development and increased endurance - along with quicker recovery time. The other day I had to run for the bus. Not a long run, but one that two months ago would have had me still catching my breath when I got off the bus 8 minutes later. I was set by the time we left the university mall area. I’m also noticing much more awareness of my posture and how I stand and walk.

Is it the end all and be all? No, and for the free step exercise, I’ve already added wrist weights to help increase my workout. I know eventually I’ll move beyond it, but for now, it’s got me started, and with as out of shape as I’d let myself get, that’s an excellent thing.

I’ve been off for a week due to being away on vacation, so I know the trainer will have some words for me when I get back! It’s been fun for me and gets me into a “I want to be more physically fit” mood, so I think I will be more likely to do other exercise too.

Not a direct sequel, but thislooks a lot like generation 2 of the exercise based video game craze.

Does anyone have any idea where I can find one of these suckers in the Boston Area? I kid you not, I have been checking multiple locations of the following stores for weeks now:

Best Buy
Circuit City
Toys R Us
Target
Walmart
Gamespot
Electronics Boutique

It’s astonishing to me how hard this thing is to find! Does it give orgasms, too??

Looks interesting. I’m hoping some of the knockoffs fill in the gaps that Wii Fit left open, like allowing you to set up a list of exercises to run through without clicking around in between 'em all.

While we’re on the subject - I’ll tell you what I’d LOVE to see: a WiiWare (downloadable) version of Wii Fit. It’d be cool to not have to pop the disc in every time when I’m working on another game too.

ShadowFacts - no idea, man. I found mine at Target and haven’t seen one since. Your best bet is to just keep checking back and hope you stumble across one. I’m betting they’ll start to get caught up with the demand soon, but who knows.

Try using http://wiialerts.com/ - a friend ordered one this morning from CC after getting an alert from them.

Wait, what’s the thing that autoinstalls on the menu? Does that just do the body test?

This exists already- a Wii Fit channel that gives you access to the fit test. I can’t remember where I found out about it, but it’s available for download and it is free. I use it all the time.
