It was awkward and I felt bad for him.
I really want to like the show, and I’ll keep watching it, but I think you might be right. Maybe it would be better if it had more than one host. Wil Wheaton talking to an audience by himself just felt a bit awkward. Wil Wheaton & friends, though, is demonstrably hilarious.
McHale was not a standup when he started. He started doing stand up off of The Soup.
I finally watched Wheaton’s show. I didn’t think it was too horrible for a first effort. Big thing is he has to stopped laughing at the jokes. Or at least stop laughing at the jokes when he reads them on the prompter but before he’s read them to us.
I’m a fan of Wheaton as a geek icon, but don’t think he’s very good on camera. I’m glad for him if he gets to do what he wants to do but so far it rarely works for me.
I enjoyed it, too.
Yep, I heard him on the local radio a few years ago. He said that he is an actor, but when his agent explained how much money he could make touring with comedy, he put together a bunch of anecdotes and comedy and ended up touring doing that.
Patton Oswald would be perfect for this show.
He’s too big to take the role. I know Joel is famous now, but he was not very famous when he started the soup.
:smack:
“**Talk **Soup”, hosted by Greg Kinnear, then John Henson, and then some other people, only about talk shows, off the air for ages.
“The Soup”, hosted by Joel McHale, covers a hell of a lot more than just talk shows, has had a few spinoffs with other hosts, still on the air.
Learn the lore.
Very prescient!
I think this week’s show was considerably more polished and coordinated, and Wheaton’s interaction with Felicia Day was the best part.
Much better, IMO, overall.
I’m watching it, and generally agreeing with everyone. While it is amusing, Wil’s hamming up the lines is a bit much. He needs to tone it down a bit.
I did like the line “But the hand that feeds tastes so good.”
This week’s episode, I recognized “Mega Python vs Gatoroid” from the Mickey Dolenz clip, but couldn’t remember how he bit it. Gator, or python? Then I was amused when Wil realized he had seen the movie, too.
Count me in the group who really wanted to like the show, but didn’t. Most of the reasons have already been stated, so I’ll move on.
I agree that the second one was much better. Clearly he’s got a decent director who had a chat with him about the creepy splayed hand gestures, so, there’s hope for continued improvement.
But if the first two shirts and jackets fit this poorly, I am a bit frightened to think what we’ll run into as we work through his wardrobe. Hopefully they wise up and switch to khakis or even jeans and a polo shirt. Because what geek wants to have to look at a guy in a jacket during their down time, right? Even an hilariously ill-fitting shirt and jacket like these have been.
I mean, seriously, this is coming from a woman who lives in oversized polo shirts and crocs in her off hours. The pulling and puckering of those shirts is so extreme that it’s practically a sub-plot of the show! the ties look like they would have worked on his skinny teen-aged body but are comically lost on the breadth of an adult male chest. And the jackets are open so wide one wonders if they had to split the back seam to get them on at all. And these are the outfits for the first two shows? This is gonna get funnier.
I’d seen it too.
I like the show. I have seen the first two and thought they were funny.
I’m about done with this. I really really wanted to like it. But half of what they do is mock real stuff for being bad, and the other half is make up bad stuff that parodies real good stuff. Except their parodies aren’t very funny, and sometimes I can’t even tell which are which, and it’s hard to know if I should be laughing at something or laughing with it. Regardless, Wil is up there laughing way too hard at his own stuff, which is always a comedy turn off.
Last episode, I didn’t even crack a smile. I guess I’ll just wait for Tabletop season 3.
We’ll keep watching, but not sweat it too much if we miss an episode. He’s getting better, but it’s still a hefty trip to “competent.”
I gave it one more try this week, and I’m glad I did. A shirt that fits, rolled up at the sleeves, and Wil looking comfortable and at home on the set. What a difference!
LOVED the response to Al Roker’s overplayed “Breaking Bad” spoiler (A double one finger salute for those who missed it.) And the MST300-esque live-dubbing of the Queen’s voice was hilarious.
This is what I was hoping the show would be. Not high intellect, but the kind of smart-alecky weekly review that geekdom has wanted for ages.
Completely concur. This show struggled a bit to find its legs, but has improved steadily and I’m glad I stuck with it.
I had bailed. I think I will give it another shot.
I have to agree with this.
I gave up on the show. I found that the segments about shows I don’t watch didn’t really mean much to me (Game of Thrones) and the segments about shows I do watch I’m typically behind so don’t want spoilers (Orphan Black). His parodies are too overdone sometimes I’m not sure what I’m about to see.
Any countdown till they start replaying the episodes but with live tweets scrolling on the screen?
I watch it. It’s okay. There’s funny stuff and not-so-funny stuff in there.
My main problem is I just don’t like Wil Wheaton.
