Who or what exactly is Donnie? How did they find him? Was he brought up by animals? Are they trying to rehabilitate him? How old is he supposed to be? What language does he speak? Can Eliza talk to him? I’ve only started watching the show, thanks in advance. Since I’m on a roll, how and when did they get Darwin?
I’ve not seen the pilot, so I don’t know for sure about the specifics of Donnie and Darwin’s arrivals. Sorry, Klasky-Czupo leaves me cold.
However, I can assure you that Donnie is a wild child, and like most children who grow up without supervision, unable to speak. He jabbers, and nothing more. I’d say he’s about eight. I think he’s played by Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Eliza cannot understand him (I can’t either, I mean, there’s no future to this character). She’s the only one who understands Darwin, part of her talk to the animals shtick.
Here’s some info from the Nickelodeon site.
Donnie–“A truly ‘wild boy’, we came across him in the jungles of Borneo.” The Thornberrys are not trying rehabilitate him, other than trying to keep him from running TOO wild. He speaks gibberish. His age is not given, but it’s about 6-7 years old.
Donnie spoke his first word on the show not long ago. I can’t remember what it was, though. Helpful, no?
I’m sorry to kinda go off track…but I had to share this with the world…and this seemed like a good place to say it.
A friend told me that the Nigel’s voice is done by the guy who was Dr. Frankenfurter in Rocky Horror.
Tim Curry? Yup, according to the Internet Movie Database, sure is.
It’s not a big secret, flickerwolf. Tim Curry does a lot of voice over work for cartoons. In addition to Nigel Thornberry, he was also the voice of George Herbert Walker “King” Chicken on “Duckman”, Trader Slick on the animated series “Jumanji”, and Moltoc on “Quack Pack.”
And to add my 2 cents, Donnie’s grunts are provided by none other than Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Thanks for all replies. Yes, Tim Curry is great. Nigel must have one of the best cartoon voices out there.
Also Lotor in Voltron in the 3rd Dimention, Captain Hook in Peter Pan and the Pirates, and Slagar the Slaver in Mattimeo: A Tale of Redwall. (These are just what I can think of off hand.)
The man is born to play villains.
