Cast Popular Discworld Characters...

I’ll try and make a start…

(old) Vimes: Clint Eastwood (if he can do an English accent)

Alan Rickman as Vetinari.

A younger Harry Dean Stanton as Nobby.

Tex Cobb as Detritus.

James Earl Jones as the voice of DEATH.

Robbie Coltrane as Colon.

Gary Oldman as anybody he wants to be.

Tim Roth as Mr. Pin.

Eliza Dushku as Susan Sto Helit.

Rowan Atkinson as Rincewind (but only because nobody knows my friend Robin, who’d be absolutely perfect).

This is going to bug me all night.

Amen to that!

I maintain that no one would make a better Rincewind than Rhys Ifans.

It’s a shame Marty Feldman is not around, because he’d be perfect as Nobby Knobbs.

The voice of DEATH should be made by Sean Connery.

Brian Blessed was born to play Ridcully.

Granny Weatherwax is Anjelica Houston.

Vimes = Harvey Keitel
Carrot=Brendan Fraser
The Bursar=John Cleese
I’ll be back tomorrow with more suggestions.

Okay, yes, Rhys Ifans is what I meant for Rincewind, I just didn’t remember that he existed. I suspect Steve Buscemi could do the job too.

I was unable to cast Ridcully, but Brian Blessed is what I was going for.

Brendan Fraser IS Carrot, the nominations are probably closed at this point.

I do have a quibble, though.

Vimes was, by his own admission, a skinny unshaven collection of bad habits marinated in alcohol. Keitel is not a small man. To get the physical presence right and still have that urge to arrest the Creator for not doing it properly show through, may I suggest James Woods? Take the time out to rent Best Seller if you need to, I’ll wait.

If Mr. Rickman is busy, I think Christopher Walken would make a very nice Vetinari. He is totally capable of making “Don’t let me detain you” sound like a threat.

Somehow I find this difficult even though I started the thread.

Cast the following…

Sweeper

Lobsang

Reg Shoe

Angua

Gaspode (voice)

The bad guy in ‘NightWatch’ (can’t remember his name)

Dibbler (cut-me-own-throat)

Sweeper: Al Leong. The man needs a speaking role.

Mr. C.M.O.T. Dibbler, Merchant Venturer: Bob Hoskins.

I have no idea why, but for Reg I get Eric Stoltz.

Oh, and Ridcully could be plausibly played by James Gandolfini.

Clint Eastwood as Cohen. He’s old, he could kick your ass, what more needs to be said?

Everybody knows there’s only one possible Nobby Nobbs, and it’s Tony Robinson. He’s probably too old at this point, though.

And Jerry Doyle for Vimes, that’s what I say.

They should all be played by the characters I see and hear in my head.

What?
Oh, very well…
I have to say that I don’t really like Eliza Dushku for Susan. She’s not sensible-seeming enough. Now, as Angua, she could really shine. She could also be in various states of undress, which is totally a bonus.

I don’t really recall how old Susan’s supposed to be in, say, Hogfather or The Thief of Time, so this might be off-base, but I recommend Catherine Zeta-Jones. I mean, she could do the accent…

Alan Rickman would be good as Vetenari, but I feel he lacks a certain… Um, there’s no easy way to say this, but… Thinness. Vetenari looks like a carnivorous flamingo, remember. When I see Rickman, I can certainly see the carnivorous part… My suggestion is an older Johnny Depp.

Wow, nevermind. I really don’t like any of my suggestions. I’m going back to the characters in my head…

If Rickman can pull off Severus Snape, he can pull off Vetenari. JMHO. (Then again I also want to cast him as Alucard from Hellsing so clearly I’m a bit off my nut when it comes to Alan Rickman.)

I can see Eastwood as Cohen, but can Eastwood do a slight Yiddish accent? Because the role really needs it, doesn’t it?.

Too bad Angela Lansbury’s too old for Madame Palm, in her younger days she definitely could have done it.

More suggestions.

The Voice of Gaspode: Robert Carlyle.
CMOT Dibbler: Harry Dean Stanton
Susan Sto Helit: Helen Baxendale
Albert: Bob Hoskins
Mort: Too bad Eric Stoltz is too old.
Lord Rust: How about Roger Moore?
Reg Shoe: Jeremy Irons
Mr Pin: Vinnie Jones

ITO on the Brendan Frasier as Carrot. But I think Catherine Zeta-Jones is a bit to old to be Susan. Isn’t she in her twenties?

Vetinari: Hugo Weaving. But Alan Rickman wouldn’t be bad either.

Carrot Top for Rincewind.

maybe because the author is english and im english all the characters have english accents in my head so that vetos most american actors, unless they are very good at acents. i dont think i could stand to sit through another johnny deep and heather graham accent torture session ala ‘from hell’.

that said im going to go against my no americans rule and suggest christina ricci for susan. it may just be my ricci fetish coming through but her turn as wednesday adams forever cemented her as the dour serious sensible type. and if she can pull off wednesday she can pull off susan.

Brooke Shields might make a good Angua – I mean, those eyebrows do like kind of werewolfish, don’t they?

Kathy Bates for Lady Sibyl Vimes nee Ramkin.

I second Brian Blessed for Ridcully and Rowan Atkinson for Rincewind. If Rowan’s not available – Michael Palin or Terry Jones.

We haven’t seen or heard of Eskarina the Female She-Wizardess since Equal Rites. If casting is needed, I recommended the actress – can’t remember her name – who played Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movies.

Either Eliza Dushku or Christina Ricci would be good as Susan Sto Helit: Young, pale, ethereal, yet hard as nails. Winona Ryder would work too – but perhaps a bit old?

Eric Idle’s a bit old but he would make a perfect Reg Shoe – really a zombified reprise of his bit in MP&THG. Not a big leap from “I already told you, we’re an anarcho-syndicalist commune!” to “That’s what I’m on about! Rampant vitalism!”

I’ve seen no nominations yet – and can’t think of any myself – for Nanny Ogg, Magrat, The Fool/King Verence (and remember, Tomjohn has to resemble him – might even be a dual role!), and – oh heck – who was the young, rubenesque, opera-singing witch in Maskerade?

I’d say Angie Jolie for Angua.

Second Rickman for Vetinari and Fraiser as Carrot.

Geoffry Rush as Vimes ( or anyone else he wanted to play for that matter)

Danny DeVito just sorta stands out as Sgt. Colon I think.

That’s all I can think of off the top off my head… I’ll come back if I can think of any more.

Helena Bonham Carter-Susan.
Second Sean Connery as voice of Death
Albert-Donald Sutherland
John Cleese- Ridcully.
Vimes- Jean Reno
Rincewind-David Hyde Pierce . Right down to the facial tics.
Third Rickman as Vetinari & Fraser as Carrot
Colon-Bob Hoskins
Gaspode-Robin Williams
Nobby-Steve Buscemi
Nanny Ogg (Please don’t ban me for this) Bette Midler
Granny Weatherwax-Maggie Smith
Magrat-Michelle Pfeifer
CMOT Dibbler- John Leguizamo

wine’s run out…back in a bit.

So sorry. Not Helena Bonham Carter as Susan. Natalie Portman. Always get those two mixed up.

Bette Middler is a good suggestion.
Billy Zane is Greebo in human form.
