Where's My Discworld Casting Thread?

With the return of the Discworld Reading Club, the time is ripe for a new Discworld casting thread, says I.

That, and my 1yr old daughter received Where’s My Cow? as a present - I’m just looking after it for her, really.

Anyway, the illustrations for WMC? nudged my thinking and made one thing absolutely clear:

Pete Postlethwaite is Vimes! I can’t believe I never saw this before. I’m sure others have mentioned it in previous casting threads, but it never gelled until seeing those illos.

Any comments or other suggestions?

If Marty Feldman were still with us, I think he’d make a dandy Corporal Nobbs.

Sacrilege! He’d play the role he was born to do (And has already done)…Igor!

Can anyone else see Kathy Bates as Nanny Ogg?

Brendan Fraser = Carrot.

Maggie Smith as Granny Weatherwax.
Patrick Stewart, AlanRickman or Jeremy Irons as Vetinari.

I think Paul Gross would be a much better Carrot.

Rickman could certainly play Vetinari, but he’d have to tone down the snarkiness in his voice a little. Vetinari always has a perfectly even voice.

Frasier could be a good carrot, but he’d have to be a little more manly.

Apparently, there’s some talk about a Discworld movie, directed by Sam Raimi

Slightly off topic, but Johnny Depp should–no, must–play Crowley, and Paul Bettany would make a smashing Aziraphale.

Back on topic, I could see Uma Thurman as Angua–or maybe Kate Beckinsale. Now I’m trying to think of someone for Ponder Stibbons or Rincewind…

Orlando Bloom = Victor Maraschino (nee Victor Tugelbend) from Moving Pictures

Curses, beaten to it again.

Not Kate, but Uma. Exotic, wolf-like that can carry off the carnivorousness required.

Sam Vimes: Bob Hoskins

I was going to say “before he died” but I checked and he’s still alive. So I’ll say “when he was younger”.

Arte Johnson** is Rincewind

Granny Weatherwax - Julie Andrews
Nanny Ogg - Angela Lansbury
Magrat - Anne Hathaway

The Patrician - Anthony Hopkins
Death - Ian McKellen

I think Ian Richardson (House of Cards) would be a perfect Vetinari - he’s got that air of ‘better than the rest of you’ but can also be warm and genuine on occassion. Which is kinda how I see Vetinari.

I think Anne Hathaway is way too pretty to be a Magrat.

Too old. Vetinari is ageless. You just know his hair will never go gray or fall out.

I agree. Miranda Hart would be a good Magrat, but she is a bit old?

Yeah, good point. Still, I think he has the right ‘presence’, we just need to take him back in time around 20 years…!

The voice, maybe. But Death should be a CGI.
