The Wire 5.09 Late Edition ON DEMAND [Open Spoilers]

So I just watched next week’s episode of The Wire on demand…

spoiler space

A really good episode, I thought, and for once there are many rays of hope:
-Bubbles seems to have it together
-Namond seems to have it together
-Dukie and Bug are ending up in non-catastrophic situations
-The big takedown of the Stanfield crew went down, and (unless somehow the serial killer stuff all totally backfires and fucks up the warrants and evidence) it looks like they’re all going down
-Michael was smarter than Snoop, and she finally got what was coming to her (in a remarkably touching scene)

On the down side:
-What is Michael possibly going to do?
-How fucked are McNulty and Freamon?
-There’s only one more episode ever :frowning:

On the unresolved side:
-What is Gus going to do about Templeton?

Chris goes down, but Marlo escapes, given the events following Gregg’s spill

If there’s a public expose of McNulty’s fraud, then Templeton’s fucked as well. But that may not happen since Carcetti isn’t helped by a fraudulent PD. McNulty’s in for a permanent but private demotion. Given that Simon has it in for the print media, he may just let Templeton go scotfree (har har).

You think that they might finally catch the lawyer after five seasons? That would be a worthwhile ending.

Was the guy in the evidence locker someone we were supposed to know, or were we just supposed to assume he did something that the powers didn’t like?

I don’t know if Dukie is in a “non-catastrophic” situation - he is going to the junkyard/stable where Bubbles’ junkie friends hooked him up with the stuff that killed Sherrod. Dukie is basically back to living with junkies again.

I also am wondering why they keep showing Dukie getting cut - once on the fridge and once on the barbed wire. It might be way too late for the show to develop this out now, but it seems like we’re to think Dukie’s fate will be “death by infection.”

If the lawyer ends up getting caught, it might be by Hurc’s doing (knowingly or unknowingly). So he might just end up fulfilling what he had Carver say about how Herc is the savior of West Baltimore. Once again, everyone who is off the force is doing the most good.

I just looked it up and the guy in the evidence locker is that alcoholic veteran cop who tried to throw himself down the stairs to get disability. According to Wikipedia:

Who was the woman that Bug was sent to? No matter how hard I pay attention to the show, little details always slip pass me!

Seeing Naymond was refreshing.

I’m torn about how I feel about Greggs’ confession. I don’t like McNulty, but it just seemed vengeful. I guess she’s in CYA mode, knowing that the truth will come out eventually. Can’t say I blame her, but damn. At least wait till the bad guys are out of the way.

I was also touched by the Snoop scene. When Michael said, “You look good, girl”, it made me wonder if that was the first reference to her gender throughout the whole show.

I don’t know why, but I was thinking this was gonna be the finale. I’m glad it’s not, but I will be sad next week.

An aunt - or a great aunt - of Michael and Bug.

I forgot about this (since I watched the episode way too early). You’re right that it was totally touching. How fucked up is that? The writing on The Wire is so good that we get “touched” by a scene in which one of the characters gets her head blown off at close range.

An aunt, or a great-aunt.

My husband finally watched tonight – he’s a Wire virgin – hasn’t seen a single episode, despite weeks of watching me watching the DVDs. He sat quietly through it all, which is unusual for him.

Bubbles looks better every week. I’d like for him to see Kima again so she can see how well he’s doing.

I think I’m okay with Kima blowing the whistle on McNulty. She struggled with it though.

Real good episode. Reminded me of season 4 episodes – tragic.

I noticed Dukie getting cut, too (they weren’t coy about it). I just took it as a “loss of innocence” indication.

Again, you see the crazy methods working (McNuts), and being underbut by people trying to do the “right” thing.

And, sometimes, things are undone just because people are as stupid as Herc. Good ep.

I expect Herc to be the reason the case against Marlo falls apart. He basically told Levy that there was a wiretap, and since it was not legally authorized, all that evidence will get thrown out.

I don’t think that Kima was merely in CYA mode; she honestly thinks what McNulty and Freamon are doing is wrong. When McNulty first told her about the setup, she kept saying “You can’t do that” – not in the sense that they can’t get away with it, but that it shouldn’t be done. That’s also why she asked Carver about his experience with writing up Coliccio.

I finally had time to catch this episode last night and I agree with this prediction. I think Herc’s conversation with the attorney, and his suggestion that a wire-tap was involved, will un-ravel the case against Marlo. The only thing I see possibly keeping that from happening is Levy getting pinched based upon Clay Davis’ tips to Lester.

It was great to see how Bubbles is moving forward. If there is a “happy ending” anywhere in The Wire, I hope Bubbles is a part of it.

Yeah, the whole Marlo thing was possible because Herc gave up Marlo’s phone number, and now the whole thing will come undone because Herc told Levy about the wiretap. That’s what I meant about the unraveling because some people are just stupid.

Just saw the episode… I don’t like how they’ve set up the events of the season, but this was a reasonable way to develop (and begin to finish) them. I would never have thought that Marlo would turn on Michael, though I guess his less-than-enthusiastic attitude towards the ruthlessness of Clan Marlo have been evident for quite a while; unless there’s evidence (of which there’s none), attitude’s all you have to go on as a crime lord.

I really really hope that Clan Marlo doesn’t get off on technicalities; perhaps Levi will be able to get them off on technicalities, but Lester’s Clay Davis probe will manage to get enough dirt on Levi that Levi allows them to put Marlo & co. behind bars, in exchange for Levi’s own freedom. Thematically, works for the show, as the white-collar criminals usually make out OK…
