THE WIRE: Polls to determine Favorite Characters, Pre-Poll Discussion

In The Wire – all seasons discussion thread with OPEN SPOILERS starting with Post #64 and continuing for several posts, the idea of a poll or polls to determine “SDMB’s Favorite Characters on The Wire” has begun to be discussed.

To maintain the integrity of the discussions of other matters in that thread, we are moving further poll considerations here.

Please use this thread for discussing the poll(s) and reserve the parent thread for other matters.

Thanks,
Zeldar

I just had another idea re: polling options… Shouldn’t we just go ahead and declare Omar the winner?

Might as well put up the poll anyway…the game’s out there, and it’s play or get played.

To save a bunch of checking back and forth, here’s the pertinent commentary from the other thread:

Not just a whole lot is said about Brother Mouzone, and according to IMDb he’s only in seven episodes, but for my money he’s one of the standout characters in the show.

I’m toying with the idea of a poll to determine the favorite characters in the show. Using IMDb’s record-keeping [Full cast and crew for “The Wire” (2002) ] as a basis, and acknowledging that their list has over 300 actors listed, with at least 100 of them being in at least 10 episodes, how should I select a meaningful slate to put into a poll? How many votes per Doper should I allow?

Just as a frame of reference, here are those with more than 20 episodes’ credit:

Dominic West … Det. James ‘Jimmy’ McNulty / … (60 episodes, 2002-2008)

Ideas?

You could probably cherry-pick from the 2nd tier - you’ve got to have (IMO) D’Angeo, Wee-Bey and Valchek, but a lot of the others are unnecessary (though Kenard was a perfect little bastard, as well).

Thanks for the idea. I like it. Maybe if we have a few people post 5-10 names from the <15 episodes group, we could cover the less frequently seen, but still important ones.

I’ll start with ten I really liked:

Michael B. Jordan … Wallace (13 episodes, 2002)
Method Man … Melvin ‘Cheese’ Wagstaff / … (13 episodes, 2003-2008)
Pablo Schreiber … Nickolas ‘Nick’ Sobotka / … (13 episodes, 2003-2008)
Chris Bauer … Frank Sobotka (12 episodes, 2003)
Clark Johnson … City Editor Augustus ‘Gus’ Haynes (10 episodes, 2008)
Marlyne Barrett … Council President Nerese Campbell (10 episodes, 2006-2008)
Bill Raymond … The Greek (10 episodes, 2003-2008)
S. Robert Morgan … Butchie (10 episodes, 2003-2008)
Steve Earle … Walon (8 episodes, 2002-2008)
Nathan Corbett … Donut (8 episodes, 2006)

From the 15-20 episode group, I’d add:

Paul Ben-Victor … Spiros ‘Vondas’ Vondopoulos (17 episodes, 2003-2008)
Peter Gerety … Judge Daniel Phelan (15 episodes, 2002-2008)

From the under 15 list, I’d add:

Michael Hyatt … Brianna Barksdale (12 episodes, 2002-2006)
*Brianna was the one really pulling the strings with Avon most of the time.
Wendy Grantham … Shardene Innes (11 episodes, 2002-2008)
*Love this character.
David Costabile … Managing Editor Thomas Klebanow (10 episodes, 2008)
*Ok, the character is bland, but I love the actor. He gets bonus points for his great work in “Damages,” “Flight of the Conchords,” and “Breaking Bad.” He’s also “super delicious”.

Michael Potts … Brother Mouzone (7 episodes, 2003-2004)

  • From a # of episodes to awesomeness of character ratio, Mouzone has to be tops.

I’ve had another idea on a poll (actually a series of polls) to determine the favorite charcters.

Using the IMDb list I linked to upthread, break down that list into groups based on number of episodes they were in. Keep each group in the 20-30 range (as much as possible) for characters mentioned in a particular sub-poll. Allow five votes per Doper per poll.

After some time has gone by and front runners in each group have been identified, select the top x-number from each poll and put them all in a Final Poll.

My way of thinking is that the bottom portion of that big IMDb list, say those who appeared in fewer than five episodes, could either be disregarded or else Dopers could be asked to pick some number (five let’s say) from those remaining.

Using that logic, the groups might be:

  1. 30-60 Eps – 21
  2. 20-29 Eps – 16
  3. 15-19 Eps – 19
  4. 11-14 Eps – 28
  5. 9-10 Eps ---- 25
  6. 7-8 Eps ----- 27
  7. 5-6 Eps ----- 32
  8. Fewer than 5 Eps – The rest

How does this plan sound? What would improve on this basic idea?

I like it, but I was also going to make a polling suggestion… What if the poll was broken up by what “group” the character belongs to. We could have the police, the streets, City Hall, the docks/school/newspaper/whatever (maybe just miscellaneous). Then we could pit the best of each group against one another. We could even break the categories down a bit… Marlo’s group against Barksdale’s for example.

That sounds fun, too. I’m pretty sure I may not know all the groups thoroughly enough to do those groupings, though. Do you feel comfortable doing such a thing yourself? I feel no special need to “own” the poll(s). I would just like something a bit more involving (and easier to keep count of) than just asking random Dopers to post their own list(s) of favorites. In my own case, when I tried to do such a thing from memory, I quickly realized I was leaving out some important characters. The IMDb list ought to minimize good ones being left out. That’s my main reason for wanting to rely on it (or something at least as comprehensive).

The number of episodes concept just seemed simple enough to manage. Creating polls from the list ought to be a simple copy/paste maneuver once the size of the groups is determined.

Another issue: should the character’s name (as opposed to the actor’s) be how they’re listed in the poll? I doubt if I could name more than a dozen or so actors, but I feel pretty sure I could name 100 or more characters, whether I really liked them or not.

Maybe we use the # of episodes (which I think has the most merit) to whittle the list down a bit and when it gets to a more manageable size, depending on who is left standing, we see if splitting the characters up by group makes sense?

I like the idea of grouping the characters.

I think it’d be easiest to use character names, but we should include the actor’s name too. Doesn’t hurt to have some name recognition and it’d help if someone wanted to check the actor’s IMdB listings.

Can the polling (and discussion of the polling) be in a separate thread?

Certainly. Now may be the time to move the discussion to another thread. I’ll start one right away.

That would be my hope! He certainly jumped out as the winner of the “Omar” thread a little while back.

My number one for sure!

I have to agree that the poll will be fun even if Omar ought to be the clear winner. Knowing the Top Ten or Twenty would be meaningful, I think.

I for one am curious how my tastes in the characters and the actors who made them real, square up with other fans of the show.

Top three favorite characters.

Does that mean per sub-poll or overall? Three per sub-poll makes sense to me, but I would hope to have at least five per voter in a Final Poll. That way, the chances of seeing somebody besides Omar and whoever your #2 and #3 may be, would be improved on.

I would refer to the recent ordeal of Favorite TV shows – that took well over a month to decide – as evidence that having five votes per voter does seem to zoom in on the real favorites convincingly.

I like three votes per person for the sub-poll too. It’ll make it harder for someone to not vote on their favorite because you think enough other people will, if that makes sense.

We need to figure out how to break the groups up. How small is too small for a group? Example, the Greeks probably don’t need their own group but what about the dock workers the teachers or the Sun workers? Maybe the category for those could be an umbrella “Focus of Season Group” (or something more elegant.) The Court House is a group but then you also have City Hall and general politicians. One big “Politics” group that encompasses Baltimore PD… Do we do them as one big group or do we have subgroups like: Homicide, Major Crimes Unit, beat cops, etc…

This Wiki page is pretty comprehensive and breaks characters down by grouping as well. Could be very helpful. They start w/ 7 main grous: The Law, The Politics, The Street, The Schools, The Docks, The Paper and then go from there…

Sorry, I meant per sub-poll. I like five for the final as well.

Could you explain a little more about your plan, please?

Would the first step be just a Number-of-Episodes set of polls to be organized by Group-within-Show after the preliminary phase picks the leaders by Episodes Groups?

Or would you begin with a list of the characters in the “Group-within-Show” without reference to Number-of-Episodes?

If I’m reading you right, the former version is your preference, but I want to be sure I understand.

Hm… Now that I think about it, I think we really need to choose one or the other. We can still have a cutoff of a certain number of episodes though, let’s say nobody with fewer than thirteen episodes can be included (a full-season’s worth of eps).

We can also allow exceptions to the rule if someone would like to nominate an under-10 character that they think is worthy of being included in the poll. If another person seconds it, than it’s added. For example, I imagine we’ll want Brother Mouzone somewhere on the poll even though he was only in 7 eps and I doubt I’d have a pretty positive response to that.

I need to look more carefully at the Wiki organization, but what I remember of it was very good. If we can be sure they haven’t left anybody meaningful out of their listing(s), I could certainly follow their lead.

Seven sounds like a reasonable number to break down the 300+ characters into. That would be on the order of 40+ per group, right? Of course, some groups would be way less than that and some way more. Once you starting counting every kid running dope in the Street group, it’ll be way bigger than anything. But many of those kids may not have even had names! That’s one of the fascinating things about the show to me.

I agree… Let’s split them up into seven groups and see how they look. Want to do that now? Which ones would you like to compile? I’ll go ahead and take the street for starters.

Here is the link to the Wiki list of characters.

Hopping right on that idea, let’s look at the under-13 and greater-than-5 set to see who participants in this thread might wish to have in the running for Favorite Character status:

…and maybe even more!

Fair enough! I’ll start with The Docks and we can compare notes.

Don’t forget:

David Costabile … Managing Editor Thomas Klebanow (10 episodes, 2008)

In separating out the list, would you want the Greeks lumped in w/ The Street or The Docks? I’m thinking Docks, myself.

Similar question for Levy. Politics (Courthouse) or Street?

Cutty and Deacon and Bubbles? All street or should we differentiate between the criminals and the non-criminals? Seems like we might want to, at least to get the street to a more manageable list.

Klebanow is in my list above, I hope.

I’ll put the Greeks in the Docks list, just to keep the S2 folks together.

Let’s think of Levy as Politics, just to have more in that list.

Cutty, Deacon and Bubbles all Street, and I’ll leave it to you if you want to make Street two groups. I think smaller groups (2) would make the three votes more meaningful than to have to stretch three over the whole crowd!

I still feel five is a little better for prelim voting, but I can go either way.

I’m fine w/ any number you feel will get the most accurate results. I defer to your better judgment.

I think I’ll split street into “Thugs” and “Non Thugs” for now for lack of a better term at the moment. I’d only put active criminals in the first group and put everyone else in the second (Cutty, Bubbles, Walon, Brianna, etc).

Or, instead of “Non Thugs” we just call it “Miscellaneous” as a catch-all for minor characters that don’t fit neatly into another category such as Shardene and Michael’s mom.

Ok, here’s my list of criminals. Let me know if you notice anything amiss.
