I think a case can be made for that, but we also can’t just decide that everywhere Russia wants to establish dominance is something that we’ll cede to them until it affects an interest we can’t ignore. So fine, Syria’s not the place to make a stand, but imagine a situation where the Iranian government falls and Putin wants to install a pro-Russian government in its place and is willing to back that intention with arms. You kinda have to take a stand there and say “no one messes with Iran’s transition”.
The US created this catastrophe? Syria was a stable country before assad started shooting at peaceful protesters.
And the humanitarian crisis is not solely down to the fact that it’s a warzone but also that russia is deliberately targeting hospitals (with so-called “double tap” attacks).

We’ll pull the ballistic missile sites out of Poland. You stay the hell out of the Baltics and Europe. Let’s shake hands.” I have no idea how that would turn out, but it would have to be better than nuclear saber-rattling. So, there’s maybe a bright lining there.
As Putin I would say: “Split the Ukraine along its national lines into a Ukrainian part and a Russian part, Baltics can become Nato and we have a deal.”

Yes there have been failures, but look at it on the whole. He is a successful executive, and in being so you have to negotiate and compromise, and at time be bullish and headstrong to win.

I don’t expect Trump to be a peacenik at all. The point here is that there are some countries you can bomb or shoot down their warplanes and get away with it (places like Iraq, Libya, Yemen, and yes, Iran) and countries that you can’t be certain you’ll get away with it (USA is #1 on this list and Russia is #2). Countries on that latter list have the potential to really fuck up your world if they decide to.
