The World's Greatest Tie or How I blew up on Reddit.

Brand new to Reddit, and fairly green on how the site even works, on Friday I posted a picture I took while on vacation in New Orleans of a crazy tie I found in an antiques store along with a caption that I thought would be amusing.

Apparently, a lot of people agreed with me because it rocketed up to #4 on r/funny and ended up with a rating of around 1,600 with several hundred comments. According to the main page at imgur, the pic was viewed almost 600,000 times.

Here’s my post: “I really love Tabasco sauce and desktop computers… Do you have a tie for me?” “Hold on, I’m about to blow your mind.”

Is it always so easy to blow up on there, or did I capture lighting in a bottle right out the gate? Has anyone else here gotten a taste of Reddit “stardom”?

Wow! I remember clicking on that link. I posted this link to a picture of my dog, who is awfully cute, and didn’t get a single upvote. Mangy old cats get more! So, yeah–you’re good at Reddit.

Not me…

For what it’s worth, I recall that tie from Reddit the other day as well, ha!

You caught lightning in a bottle, but you had a lot of things going for you. In order to get on the front page you have to play their game. In this case you had a few things going for you (image, something quirky, retro tech nostalgia) which tend to work well. Even then, you got lucky because so many other people are trying to play the same game.

I very briefly made the front page with a submission to /r/wikipedia, as it was one of the most popular submissions to that subreddit ever.

Sneak brag!

Did you buy the tie? I wonder if you could follow that up with an ebay link…

Maybe a little.

NO! I didn’t buy it. I found it in an antiques mall on Magazine St in NOLA and by the time I realized that I should have bought the tie, we’d walked too far to go back easily. I’m thinking of sending a friend of mine into the store to find it for me though.

From reading the comments on my Reddit post, I may have caused a mini-run on Tabasco ties on eBay. Many people posted that they had bought one or were bidding on one and sure enough, when I checked eBay’s listings - there were a lot of completed Buy-it-Now auctions for weird Tabasco ties on Friday evening.

I have a red Tabasco tie with a bunch of small PC’s on it all showing the Tabasco logo on their screens. Got it back when I was working helpdesk at a company that required ties.

Haven’t worn it since.

I actually have a Tabasco tie but not that one. There are a number of different ones as well as a whole line of Tabasco art. My mother has the entire framed set of Tabasco paintings framed and hung on the walls of her living room. I am not sure how they came up with the computer/Tabasco hybrid tie however.

I saw that picture on imgur yesterday! Funny.

I don’t really know what the interplay is between reddit and imgur (and 9gag, whatever the hell that is), but I like imgur as a timewaster.

The best part of the entire Reddit experience was someone called “Shitty_Watercolors” posted a watercolor of my tie photo. Love it.

Which subreddit did you post it to? I think your dog is really cute!
