The Writing Life: Lurch, Mr. Homn, and Me

As I’ve probably mentioned all too often, I write science fiction. I recently sold a couple of stories to Frequency Magazine, an audio anthology magazine. Well, last night I talked with the editor, who told me who’ll be reading it.

Carel Struycken.

If the name isn’t familiar, the face certainly is – he played Mr. Homn (Lwaxana Troi’s servant) in Star Trek: TNG, the giant in Twin Peaks, Lurch in the Addams Family movies, as well as one of the aliens in “Men In Black.” It was a thrill to actually recognize the name.*

Of course, then I realized that in most of his roles, he never spoke. Evidently he speaks with a strong accent. I’m concerned that it may be difficult understanding what he’s saying, but the editor assures me it was fine, and that the accent enhanced the work. Maybe . . .

*The last time an actor read my story, I had barely heard of her, though evidently a lot of people have – Catherine Oxenberg. She read the thing cold and ended up cracking up at the end.

Hey, I’m a sci-fi geek, and I sure recognized the name. (I wonder if I’ve read your stuff?)

But I gotta ask - why are large character actors reading your work?

(Oh, and if you’re not busy in 2004, come to San Diego and be a Guest at Gaylaxicon for me - I’m ConChair! )
