Me and Mr. Homm

Frequency Magazine has published my story “Patron” as an MP3 audiobook. Take a listen at Frequency’s Home Page – they’re allowing free downloads.

It’s being read by Carel Struycken. The name may not be familiar, but the face is. He played Lurch in the movies “The Addams Family” and “Addams Family Values,” Mr. Homm (Laxwanna Troi’s assistant) in “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” the giant in “Twin Peaks,” and was also in “Men in Black” (in the restaurant scene).

I was thrilled when the editor told me he’d be reading; it was someone I actually knew.* As I ran down the list of things I knew he was in, I came to a realization: I had seen him many times, but I had never actually heard him speak.

Struycken has a very noticeable accent. Luckily, it fits in with the story (though he does seem to be a bit slow in his delivery).

So give it a listen and see what you think.

*A few years ago, one of my stories was read by the actress Catherine Oxenberg, who evidently is well known, but whose work I was unfamiliar.

There was that NextGen episode where Deanna was about to get married but her fiancé ran off to cure a plague. Mr. Homm spoke his only lines toward the end of that episode, thanking Picard for the drinks.
