Care for an AYDS candy, Johnny?
*“If you really love them, you’ll give them AYDS.”*BRAVO!
Just thought to add another Simpsons episode that may not be aired again, at least for a little while.
The recent ‘boy band’ episode ends with a deranged US Navy Lieutenant destroying the NYC building housing ‘Mad’ magazine.
At the end, the magazines end up floating through the air, and the publishers pick themselves out of the rubble. May cut a little close to home for a while.
IMHO, it’s worth shelving these episodes for a little while, if only to placate those viewers who are easily offended.
Believe it or not, where I live, this episode aired on the night of the attack.
I can’t help but think they’ll rebuild the towers. The era of films and TV shows that don’t have the towers as part of the skyline will be the odd ones.
I find it odd that there are so many parallels that people are finding. It’s not all pop culture, either. I grew up on a farm with twin silos at 80 feet tall. An Air Force plane (I was too young to have a clue what kind of plane) flew between the silos, the second buzzed on silo, and the third stayed high. I remember being outside and seeing it, and I remember that it spooked all the cows. I wasn’t obviously in the barn (which was between the silos), but I was told that all four milking machines were kicked off at once.
You must not be in America, then!
I’m in America. I couldn’t swear that it was the night of the attack - it may have been the night after. I just remember turning on the T.V. (I only get one channel) and being surprised that the news wasn’t on, then being dumbfounded to see that it was that episode.
It’s not really so strange. Nobody at the station is going to know every segment of every show, and everyone had more important things on their mind. It really was stranger that they were showing regular programming at all.
Stewie, the infant-who-would-be-king, is at an airport.
He’s trying to find a way to get his bag on board. He
distracts the security worker by singing Good Ship Lollipop. As the guard looks at the cute lil’ baby singing, we see his bag pass through x-ray. It’s filled with guns, bombs, and death rays. Stewie stops singing and remarks that ‘I hope Osama Bin Laden deosn’t know any show tunes.’
Cut to-
Shot of Osama singing a song from Chorus line to distract the guards. We see a bag full of terrorist equipment pass through x-ray.
At the time, I thought it was hilarious. I know that I'll never see that scene again. I wonder if I'll even see that episode again.
As for Homer-I think He should do a memorial to the WTC
Homer stands in front of a crowd of Springfieldians.
Homer- Normally, I can't make a speech without cracking
a few jokes. But, right now I wanna be serious. A terrible thing has happened. We need to pull together as Americans. Now, I'm not a smart man. In fact, that doctor said I wasn't even as smart as a chimp, a baboon, or even that thing with the stripes. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that now is not the time to beat up other Americans. You can't know what someone is like just from their religion or the color of their skin. Apu is my friend and a good American. But, some people would hit him just because he's a Muslim
Apu-Homer, I remind you that I am a Hindu. You remember H I N D U? The statue of Ganesha? The Hindu wedding I had in your backyard?
Homer-Oh, yeah. With the elephant and all the peanuts ...ummm peanuts. Well, some people would call Carl names just because he's a Muslim.
Carl-Homer, you and I go to the same church.
Homer-Anyways, we should be nice to our neighbors. Just
because someone is a Muslim or an Arab doesn’t mean that they’re a terrorist. Springfield is full of people who came to the US of A because they love America, and I bet your town is too.
Back in I think the third season, Bart had a crush on the neighbor girl. When she babysat for him, Lisa and Maggie, it was her idea to get takeout from “Two Guys From Kabul”. Syndication might already have jettisoned the establishing shot of the marquee; the rest shouldn’t be objectionable.
I thought it was soooooooo funny at the time, though. “Every town has a “Two Guys from Italy”! But who’s gonna want food from Kabul? That’s in Afghanistan, right? Or is it Yemen?”
The Simpsons is not a show known for censoring its episodes. The Simpsons Archive only lists a handful of cuts made due to censorship, none of which were based on current events. I do remember there was a lot of flack over them airing the episode where Maude Flanders dies at a racetrack, just a few weeks after several fans were killed at an IRL race in Charlotte, N.C.
I watched the WTC episode a few nights after the terrorist attack, and it was a bit painful to see the events taking place in a building that no longer exists. But there’s nothing offensive about the comedy, aside from a few typically stereotypical jabs at New Yorkers. In fact I think this episode stands as a worthy tribute to the former WTC.
Certainly no worse than that N’Sync episode, which sucked beyond belief and if they never showed it again, I’d be happy. Don’t think that will happen, though.
UPDATE - The WTC Simpsons episode has been pulled from syndication.
From an article in Variety, published here:
*“Twentieth Television has pulled from syndication a classic episode of ``The Simpsons’’ in which the toon family visits the Big Apple – and the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.”
*
Shame on them.
Well, I’ll be jiggered.
The WTC episode was slated to appear in Houston today. It even had it listed on the digital cable guide.
Of course it was pulled, but the one they put on made me do a double take. It was the one where Springfield runs off the immigrants. I’m sure lot of people would have trouble distinguishing an Hindu from an Muslim.

You missed one:
“Mom & Pop Art”
The first Fox and Global broadcasts of this episode (04/11/99) excluded a poke at hostages, on behalf of the three United States soldiers being held captive in Kosovo at the time. The scene appeared in all Fox and Global repeats. It did not, however, appear in syndication.

**I’m sure the episode (IIRC) where Lisa thinks she’s turning stupid will have at least one scene cut - Bart and Homer sitting on the couch watching “When Buildings Collapse”. Especially the line when Lisa mentioned that there were people in the buildings, which made Bart and Homer laugh. **
That episode just aired on Fox NY today, with the entire “When Buildings Collapse” scene intact.
Last night my local FOX station showed the episode where Homer and Ned go to Las Vegas. It opens with the towspeople gathered to watch the destruction of Mr Burns’ casino. Bart: “I can’t wait to see the implosion!” Construction guy: “IMplosion?” The building blows up and the townspeople run from an encompassing expanding dustcloud. It looked like an animated version of the WTC collapse. Freaky.
Sorry to see that the WTC episode’s been pulled.
The WTC episode was just on last nite. I live in NW Arkansas now and couldn’t believe it was on. It was kind of weird to watch now.
I never beleived this would be a ban forever. I did think it would last longer then that.
I can’t think of one good reason to censor anything out of any episode of the Simpsons.
I hope the CD versions are complete and intact.
