The XiFiles Game on XP

I’m experiencing a problem with The X-Files Games on Windows XP. I’ve installed the game onto my hard drive. OK. When I go to start a new game it’s runs fine until the initial scene outside the Bureau Headquarters. And then it crashes. The taskbar appears at the bottom of the screen with 2 little windows on it. One for the X-Files Game and another for Apple Quicktime. If I close down the Apple Quicktime window the game carrys on but without the emotion icons appearing during gameplay. ( You’ll have to know the game to know what I’m talking about). Does anyone know why this is happening? Thanks very muchp for your input.

It’s entirely possible that the version of QuickTime you are using is actually too new. I remember I once bought a CD that was “enhanced using QuickTime”. It had some video clips from the band after the audio tracks (which is common now, but not so much back then). It required QuickTime3. I had installed QuickTime4 at the time, and it wanted me to load QuickTime3 over the top, otherwise the clips would not work.

IIRC, the X-Files game came out about 1997-8, which is, as you would be well aware, long before XP came out. I assume also that you are using QuickTime5 (if not version 6).

You may be able to find out what version of QT it is looking for by the contents of the CD. If it IS an older version, and if that is what is causing the problem, it’s probably not worth downgrading your QT to play the game. You may, if you are interested in a bit of work, installing Windows98 as well as XP.

My friend did that, just so he could play some older games and know they would run properly. I intend to do the same when I get my new box in a couple of months. It’s a fairly drastic step for just one game though.
