The Young Generation and Their Parents' Music

While reading a Slashdot thread on P2P, this article from yesterday’s USA Today was linked. The article got me thinking. I don’t know if anyone else remembers, but a while back I started a thread asking what all I needed to get to get a good comprehensive rock collection. (Okay, so it was a year and a few months ago. Man, time flies.) Anyway, my music collection has expanded some in the last year and it’s still at least half stuff from the 70s or earlier, depending on how you count it. Just a quick scan through the hard drive (artists here, not really albums) to see what I’ve added since then.

Trying to keep it as basically 80s or earlier rock (or at least bands), I’ve added:

AC-DC
Allman Brothers
Bachman-Turner Overdrive
Blue Oyster Cult
David Bowie
Bob Dylan
Eagles
Earth Wind & Fire
Electric Light Orchestra
Grand Funk Railroad
Guess Who
Guns N’ Roses
Iron Butterfly
Kiss
Police
Elvis
REM
ZZ Top

So, I think it’s fair to say that I’ve got a fair bit of my parents’ music (not to mention that I’m sure they never listened to some of this stuff.) I guess I’m just wondering if other people around my age (I guess for the purposes of this thread that’d be from about early teens to mid-to-late 20s) find themselves with quite a collection of older music. Oh, and old people, what do you think of your kids taking your music? (I said in a thread earlier this week that I know from experience that the boomers do not like it when you throw “Don’t trust anyone over thirty” back at them, especially when they’re closer to 50.)

I fit the age bracket, so let’s see. I’ve got CDs from:

The Cure
The Clash
Depeche Mode
The Smiths
The Ramons
The Sex Pistols
The Beatles
New Order
REM
The Doors
Johnny Cash
Echo and the Bunnymen
Plus a few 80s compilation CDs with various artists.

This isn’t really my parents music though(with the exception of The Beatles and The Doors). My mom was a disco freak and my dad was a big 60s political music fan, neither of which will ever make an appearance in my CD player.

:smack:

The Ramones

Where are those smilies?

My music collection contains few tracks, let alone albums from earlier than the 80’s. I’m 24 and very much into contemporary electronic music, primarily trance.

Really the only “older” music that I have is 80’s dance music. I hear enough of classic rock/pop when I’m forced to hear the radio.

I stole my mother’s Peter, Paul, and Mary CD. I also have the Saturday Night Fever sountrack, the Rushmore soundtrack (which contains music from the 60s-70s), and The Royal Tenebaums soundtrack (same type of music as Rushmore). I’ve also always enjoyed listening to oldies that my dad listens to in the car. These include Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Elvis, the Coles, Supremes, etc. I don’t have any of their CDs, though. My dad took them all with him to the Philippines. :frowning:

I listen to tons of my dad’s old music. A few of the bands that come to mind

*Eric Burdon and the Animals
*Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band
*Cream
*Blind Faith
*John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers
*Jimi Hendrix
*Leonard Cohen
*A few other Swedish prog rock bands

…this is just some off the top of my head. I suppose a comprehensive list would be much much longer. Can you tell that my dad was a hippie?

Quote from a father-of-the-bride speech I heard once: “You know your daughter’s growing up when you discover her stealing from your record collection”

My parents got my and my brother started by telling us to by Rolling Stones, Beatles, Janis, and Doors albums from garage sales. Unfortunately, that was all the assistance they could provide. My parents were basically nerds in the 60’s and didn’t get into anything too risky. The Rolling Stones were a bit too ‘hard’ and ‘dirty’ for my parents, but the Beatles were fine, at least until they started ‘getting weird’. Personnally, I’m all about the ‘getting weird’. Call me a ‘head’ or whatever, it’s fine. Starting with those few classic rock standards I’ve managed to add lots more. Here’s a few:

[british]
Syd Barrett’s Pink Floyd
Soft Machine
Tomorrow
Cream
Yardbirds
The Creation
The Move
The Kinks
Hawkwind
Animals

[american]
Velvet Underground
Fugs
Moby Grape
Byrds
Silver Apples
Jefferson Airplane
MC5
Stooges
13th Floor Elevators
Country Joe

[german] - (only until mid 70’s)
Can
Amon Duul
Ashra Temple
Kraftwerk
Tangerine Dream

I’m 17. About 90% of the music in my cd collection is the same music my dad listened to back in the 60’s and 70’s. This includes:

Frank Zappa
Led Zeppelin
The Beatles
Pink Floyd
Jefferson Airplane
Cream
Rush
The Doors
Allman Brothers
Black Sabbath
The Who
Mahavishnu Orchestra
Grateful Dead

The recent, “non parental” music I listen to is:

Medeski Martin and Wood
The Flaming Lips
Tool
Primus

Recently my father gave me his old turntable that was just collecting dust in our basement, as well as his entire record collection. I’m in heaven.
