The Yukon event of 2000

There was an exploding meteor over Alaska yesterday. Unfortunately no video but that’s the nature of these things.

If you’ve ever seen something like this you know it’s too cool for words. When I was in the navy on carriers, usually working night shift, I got to see many meteors. Most were rather ordinary streaks of light but I saw a lot because of the extremely dark skies in the Indian Ocean. My eyes were also well adapted because I always wore dark glasses. Try explaining to a CHP officer why you’re wearing sunglasses while driving on the interstate at 2:00 am.

Twice I saw large meteors that broke up in the atmosphere. The larger broke into five distinct parts in a brilliant shower of color. It was like chemistry 101 with one hell of a big bunsen burner. Both spanned most of the sky and ended over the horizon.

Now I live in Phoenix where the light pollution is so bad I can’t even see the Milky Way. In Tucson things are better because of the lighting regulations to protect the nearby observatories.

Come let us go, I’ve a cask of amontillado.
