Thelma & Louise: "Shocking" Alternate Ending On DVD?!?!

I just read in New York Magazine a review about the release of Thelma & Louise on DVD. They said it includes an alternate ending that, when test screened for audiences, was too “shocking”.

Uh…considering the original ending was not exactly “and they lived happily ever after”…what the hell could the “shocking” alternate end be?

If anyone has seen the DVD, P L E A S E spoil it for me! I gotta hear what that alternate ending is!

Maybe they pulled over, were arrested, and were sentenced to 2 year’s probation and a 1000 hours of community service a piece. Later they sold the rights to their story to the Lifetime Channel.

Thank you Lady Mondegreen!!!

I guess that ending would have been slightly more depressing, although I am not sure it would have been more “shocking”.

SPOILER ALERT:

It’s the same ending, only instead of cutting off when the car is headed in an upward arc, we follow it all the way down the ground and essentially “Watch” T&L actually die, as opposed to leaving them in their last moment of, well, I dunno…triumph? Choice?

The shock is that the same alternate ending is used to flog the original DVD release and the “special edition.”

I remember hearing that one reason why the ending was changed was because the dummy bodies that “die” in the crash were obviously, well, dummies.
