I strongly prefer the StraightDope v3.7.3 theme, but it won’t stay selected. No matter what I do, every new page I navigate to renders using the Sultan theme. It doesn’t matter if I click a link in the same window, open in new tab, open in new window, nothing helps. Always sultan.
This is in firefox, which is going through an expired certificate fiasco at the moment, so it’s probably related to that. I have no idea what to do to fix the theme issue and was hoping someone might have some suggestions to try.
Here’s a thread from a few months back with that exact problem, and Dopers’ solution.
Thank you so much, that did the trick!
I am way too irrationally happy about this. I’m this close to getting up and doing a Snoopy dance…
Figured I should post the actual fix here for posterity:
Proper fix:
The bookmark I use to navigate to the SDMB was created long ago and still started with “http:”. Changing that bookmark to start with “https:” fixed me right up, all good.
Alternate fix:
User CP => Settings & Options => Edit Options => Miscellaneous Settings => Forum Skin
Choose the theme you want and it should “stick.” I felt better about leaving this set to “Use Forum Default” and fixing the bookmark proper.
Ellis Dee’s fix might have worked for him, but my bookmarks had already been switched to https:
No trouble since I made the User CP fix.
Does anyone actually prefer the Sultan skin? If not, why have it?
Some people actually do like it. I’m not one of those people, but there are some here who do prefer it.
The main reason it exists though is that google ranks your site lower if it doesn’t meet google’s definition of “mobile friendly”. Sultanstheme, for all of its flaws, meets this definition. The regular theme that is preferred by most people does not.
We have had a big problem with google ranking us very poorly. We used to show up fairly consistently in the top results for certain things. Now, if you search for something and Cecil has done an article on it, in most cases we don’t show up anywhere near the first page on the google results. If we ditched Sultanstheme, we’d be ranked even lower.
I do about 98% of my Dopework on my computer, but those rare moments when I use my phone, I really do find [del]Satan[/del] Sultan easier to read.
At some point I’m going to have to add “Satanstheme” to the glossary of terms, aren’t I?
Haven’t you already done it?
