Theme default??

All of a sudden this morning, I can’t keep my default as Straight Dope v3.7.3 - it keeps switching back to Sultantheme… Is this a new quirk or am I missing a setting to keep it from changing?

Yeah, I know, 1st world problems, but I’m getting miffed!!!

It’s fine for me.

Just a guess, but maybe your cookie is corrupted. Try deleting and then log in again.

After poking around in UserCP for a bit, I found that for some reason, the default setting for the skin had changed. I reset it the way I want it, and all is good now. So who knows…

I know tech was working to fix the Suktans Theme yesterday. Possible that changed something.

The Straight Dope Theme should be the default anyway. The other one is broken and it’s never going to get fixed.

If that’s the new nickname I’d understand.

No, apparently it is fixed.

However, people should have the ability to choose what they want.

I’ll pass this on upstairs and see what can be done here.

However, I just changed back and forth without difficulty.

I would ask that people try this again and report back.

Thanks.

Yesterday I got the bad theme for one page, but then I changed it back and haven’t had any problems since.

My suddenly changed this afternoon. I was able to change it back with no problem.

Google, unfortunately, only gives vague hints about how they do their rankings. One of the few things they are explicit about though is that if your site is not what they call mobile-friendly, then they will intentionally drop you in the rankings.

There’s a reason Ed kept the mobile theme the default, even when it became apparent that the mobile theme had a few issues. We have enough problems with being ranked poorly by google these days. The last thing we need is to give them a reason to rank us even lower.

TubaDiva is getting things fixed. For example, the highlighting issue, which gets our most complaints, has apparently been fixed. I would say that your statement that “it’s never going to get fixed” is not very accurate. If you know of other outstanding issues, be sure to let TubaDiva know about them.

I’m on Chrome v. 72.0.3626.109. Between this afternoon and this evening the Board decided to go all Sultantheme on me. I keep going back to v.3.7.3 and it keeps undoing it when I go to a different page.

When I signed on yesterday, first I was logged off, which was unexpected.

Then after I signed on it was all sultantheme.

I went back and changed the theme and so far so good, it’s stayed that way.

Please let us know if you continue to see this issue, Several people had the same experience i did; once they changed things back it was okay.

Nothing has changed for me. I even logged out (which said all my cookies have been cleared) and logged back in. Still the Not Secure warning, still Sultantheme.

This is in Chrome. I tried Microsoft Edge and the https and original skin came up fine. But please don’t make me use Microsoft Edge:eek:

I found it!!!

Open your User CP, go to Edit Options, scroll all the way down to Miscellaneous Options, select Forum Skin, and set that to Straight Dope v3.7.3.

If you try changing the setting at the bottom of whatever page you’re on, it will change back to Sultantheme as soon as you leave that page.

Unfortunately I’m still getting the red Not Secure warning triangle in Chrome.

When you click on the triangle does it pop up with a little window? Sometimes that window will give you a clue as to what the problem is.

You are on the most recent version of Chrome. I have to admit I’m puzzled.

Corrupted cookies? You might need to clear your cache. Yes, I know it’s annoying, but if they’re bad they won’t ever be good.

For those of you breathlessly awaiting the outcome, here’s what Tuba (we’re on a first name basis now) and I finally figured out.

I first bookmarked this site in 1999. I haven’t checked where the bookmark took me since then. For whatever reason, the bookmark still pointed to http:boards.straightdope.com. I changed it to https: and my security warning magically disappeared.

Thank you, TubaDiva!

I’m just grateful everything is good for folks again.

Or at least okay.

And it appears that, whenever you follow a link that’s http instead of https, it switches back for that page. For instance, here’s this thread without the s. Let’s test that:

EDIT: Yup, following that link gets me Sultantheme. But https pages remain the SD theme.
