Dear Cecil:
Then how come your arm will fall asleep if you are lying on your back with your arm resting on your stomach, not compressed between two hard objects??

Welcome to the Straight dope, bonitak.
Don’t forget to link to the column to which you are referring.
I assume it is Is it dangerous when your leg falls asleep?
As Arnold W. says, "To include a link, it can be as simple as including the web page location in your post (make sure there is a space before and after the text of the URL).
And, hopefull, more posters will be along to answer your question. I for one have never had my arm fall asleep while resting it on my stomach. I’ve certainly had it go to sleep when pinned beneath me a night.
Just curious about your circulation–do your feet go to sleep as easily? Coldness in your extremities?
Any chance that your arm fell asleep while you were sleeping on it, then you rolled over, put it on your stomach, and awoke shortly to “think” that it had fallen asleep while you were on your back?
