Theories regarding the Third World Books

Hi! As is rather obvious, I’m in college and currently taking a course about Political Change in the Third World (you can view the syllabus at http://www.willamette.edu/cla/politics/POLI-218desmond-s03.htm for more information). Although the class has interesting content, I haven’t been able to help but noticing that the reading involved is VERY biased, and hard to really accept (the teacher can be that way too). Even when alternative theories are portrayed, they tend to be either outdated versions or extremist versions that just seem like a misrepresentation to me. Can anyone suggest good literature about the topic where the authors have less than an axe to grind? I’m also interested in books about recent modernization theory, as what’s being discussed now continues to strike me as a strawman. Thank you so much!
