The blaring white background of this site has become slightly annoying to me. I’d like to see a more subtle background color, if not a white-on-black format. I’m sure that for some reason the white-on-black format would be unacceptable to some, but why not a less blinding compromise?
My eyes are good enough that I don’t require glasses, but I’d still rather not stress them out unnecessarily.
I’m no fan of Maddox, but the color scheme of his site is very easy on the eyes.
He says “I’ve chosen a black background for most of my text because it’s easier on the eyes than staring at a white screen. Think about it: your monitor is not a piece of paper, no matter how hard you try to make it one. Staring at a white background while you read is like staring at a light bulb (don’t believe me? Try turning off the lights next time you use a word processor). Would you stare at a light bulb for hours at a time? Not if you want to keep your vision.”
I have grey backgrounds turned on in my browser. And black text.
I work I have everything inverted. White text on a black background.
I feel it helps keep me from eye fatigue. Other people have tried it but can’t get used to it. I do like it though, it’s just like my birth certificate.
But since some sites aren’t set for it, like this one, things do look weird.
Ugh – that would drive me absolutely batty. I have no problem at all reading black text on a white or very light grey background, as on this site, but white or bright yellow text on a black background seems to vibrate and is exceeding difficult to maintain focus on.
You’re not a fan of Maddox? How can you not like such classics as “Bill O’Reilly is a Big Blubbering Vagina” and “How to Kill Yourself like a Man”? (My favorite method: lick a hooker’s ass.)
I totally agree with the OP. When I was doing web development and database work I turned all my text editors around to a black background. Reading the Dope for extended periods is really rough on my eyes.
I don’t necessarily think a black background is needed, however a softening of the site would be extremely welcome. Softer grays or blues would be nice.
One detail to remmeber for those of us who may occasionally slack at work, the white/grey/black color scheme is pretty innocuous and is releatively safe to read at work without getting busted.
