I was getting ready to go to the doctor this morning, putting on fresh underwear and stuff, when I started wondering about this, googled it and sure enough, the Hershey Highway is otherwise known as Route 322 and runs through Dauphin County, PA USA!!!
Well, I knew that y’all would want to know about this as soon as possible, so I posted this for you and now y’all have something interesting to talk about at the water cooler today!
Looking at a map, Rt 322 also seems to go through Hershey, PA. Is it still called Hershey Highway there, that would make more sense. That’s where the company is located.
Also, I see a Hershey Park Dr on the map in Hershey, PA.
We moved from there years ago, but according to my mom locals just called it 322.
Yes, the town really does smell like chocolate. Or it did in the 1970s. Actual production may have moved. We didn’t really notice it day to day, but when we left to visit grandparents for a week or two the scent would hit us in the face when we went back.
Yeah, it’s just 322, and it connects the Harrisburg area with State College, so it’s a road to avoid from August-December when Penn State plays at home. If you head east through Lancaster County, 322 runs through Blue Ball.
"A euphemism as explained, as well as a name for Rt 322 in Dauphin County. I heard the phrase Hershey highway as described by some here for years before I actually found that some refer to that segment of Rt 322 by the same name. If I were asking directions, etc. I think I’d simply say Rt 322, I wouldn’t want someone to get the wrong idea asking “How do I find the Hershey Highway”
I have, but it’s usually from Baltimore folks making fun of us PA residents. 98 Rock had a commercial a year or two ago where they proudly announced that their signal could be heard “all the way up the Hershey Highway”.
Anyone else heard about the other local highway naming controversy? They want to name that new expressway that runs from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Dover, Delaware. The problem is the Pennsylvanians want to name it after hometown notable Ben Franklin and the Delawareans think it shouldn’t have just a Pennsylvanian name.
Fortunately, it looks like they’ve reached a compromise and have decided to name it the Ben-Dover Way.
Hershey PA also has a street called Chocolate Avenue, if you want to avoid the Hershey Highway.
The town does still smell like chocolate, they still have chocolate factories there in town. I grew up just a few minutes away from there and us kids would get season passes to Hersheypark and spend at least one day a week there. My first “real” job was at the Penn State College of Medicine at the Hershey Hospital in a clinical lab. We would take visitors to Chocolate World for lunch and a milkshake.
