There's now another me out there...

When I joined this message board I actually put a lot of time into picking this username. Believe it or not.

I wanted something that would be unique and memorable. I purposely picked a nonsense phrase and then did a Google search to make sure the name wasn’t being used out there somewhere, on another message board say.

Well, I am no longer unique. Someone else out there needed a handle, and had to use the same lame combination I came up with lo those few years back:

That ain’t me. What are the odds?

BTW, what the heck are “letterboxes” in the context of that forum?

A book on letterboxing at Amazon has this to say:

Letterboxing is a quaint, Old World pastime that offers something for everyone. Join in the fun of figuring out cryptic clues, hiking beautiful trails, hunting for hidden boxes, and discovering exquisite hand-carved stamps. Once you master the basics of finding letterboxes, you’ll naturally want to learn how to create and hide your own.
The Letterboxer’s Companion is a complete introduction to the world of letterboxing. The book includes a history of letterboxing, tips on writing and following clues, instruction in carving personal stamps, advice on constructing letterboxes, basic land navigation techniques, and tips on letterboxing etiquette ¿everything an aspiring letterboxer needs to get started in this fascinating, family-friendly hobby.

Here’s the link that I meant to include: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0762727942/104-5562946-2227161?v=glance

and the stamps referred to are apparently rubber stamps.

Thanks for the info. It sounds like a low-tech relative of geocaching.

On just about every site I go to, I’m registered as Sir Blah. I’ve been using that handle since I first started using BBS’s (roughly 1987 or so).

That said, I’ve been wondering for awhile now just who in the hell this guy is, 'cause he sure ain’t me (I don’t even know what the hell an “SVT” is).

Heh heh…this is kind of fun, finding out what our other selves are into.

I like cars but the folks on that forum LOVE cars.

apparently I am a character in a children’s book

Used to be, if you googled Revtim, you got me. Now, you get a guy who has a very popular religious webcast for the first few pages.

If I’m not mistaken, there are some people on this forum who participate in letterboxing with their child. I want to say either** Rue DeDay**, Scylla, or Sauron though I’m not certain who among that list (if any) do. I thought it sounded like fun when I read accounts of it. You have to like hiking, and be able to read a map well.

This is not me!

and if you go by my real name

I’m an marine mammal scientist

and a china pattern (which I like very much)

I googled my real name and found a guy who’s big into the Bible Code stuff. I wrote him once, and he kind freaked out at finding someone with his name (Swaney is not a common surname). I couldn’t keep up the correspondence without getting into a major row over the issue, and I’m a totally churchified person. I just let the whole thing drop.
