These people think they are ugly.

http://abc.abcnews.go.com/specials/extreme_makeover.html

No harelips, no scars-- not even acne. They think that cosmetic surgery will make their lives better. It’s so sad that I don’t know what to say.

Well, I don’t think the dental work is a bad idea. A lot of people have bad teeth, and it’s nice if they can fix them.

Still, I don’t like the premise of the show. There’s just something…unseemly…about it.

Why would a personal trainer need a tummy tuck? That’s like a pilot buying an airplane ticket.
I do agree with Neurotik though, nothing wrong with dental work.

Er, is that a before or after picture?

Well, those women are certainly fat but I don’t see what cosmetic surgery is going to do for that.

Well I wouldn’t call them ugly but I wouldn’t say it’s “so sad” either. In their eyes, they see a problem and want to better themselves. What’s wrong with that, as long as they do it willfully?

It’s sad that these perfectly normal looking people think that looking better will make their lives easier. It’s sad that they are right.

It’s sad because all three of them are reasonably attractive people and they don’t even realize it. Certainly they have the perogative to do whatever they want to themselves but it’s a shame that they can’t be happy for who they are.

Haj

I submit that it is equally sad that if they look like movie stars people will interact more favorably with them.

Is that the before or after photo on the linked page? Their teeth all look good there, from what I can see. Anyone actually watch this?

The personal trainer had lost over a hundred pounds and had excess skin that needed to be removed.

I think it’s funny that one of them had Lasik, which was included in the “cosmetic surgery”.

I think there are several people on this board who’ve had it, and perhaps not entirely for cosmetic reasons.

In my goulishness, I decided that I -had- to watch this show last night. (For research purposes, you see)

I will admit that it was handled quite well and that the people involved really did appreciate what was being done to them. And I also have to admit that while I wouldnt want my nose done or my ample tummy and arse fussed with in any way, that I wouldn’t mind having Jose Eber do my hair. rawr

The show did leave a bit of a bad taste in my mouth when I heard the narrarator say

I was not aware that ones personal issues were kept in ones nose, hips or weak chin. In fact, if any one of these areas are where all of your personal issues -are- kept, you live a very charmed life indeed.

rollseyes

In terms of what passes for beauty, they are all ugly people.

I’m not saying that as some kind of Adonis here either, I know where I rate in terms of looks. But none of those people were particularly good looking and no amount of surgery is gonna change that. Sure, teeth are good, nose jobs, tummy tucks etc. I especially approve of the breast job!

But they aren’t gonna end up looking like Andie MacDowell or Pierce Brosnan here. So, the whole thing is pretty stupid. Typical horrible television. Taking miserabl people and broadcasting their pathetic lives for the rest of society’s amusement.

Is it possible that we can get any more shallow?

You think a little cosmetic surgery and some lip stick is going to ‘redirect their destinies’? People who believe this sort of smack have the kind of psychological issues that will keep their destiny on the same track.

I’m sure they’ll be back to feeling like their old inadequate selves after a few weeks.

Please stop the planet. I want to get off.

A wife who husband prefers a slender woman is wrong to lose weight to please her husband? He did not request it, she offers.

A wife has a boob implant because she is really licking in that area and so her husband more to play with and her clothes will fit better. This is wrong?

Both these examples are people I know. They are doing it for the other person and their own self image. This is wrong?

That it is wrong is the overall impression I am getting from the opinions on this thread.

Or is it the going on TV and doing it that is most objected to?

I fell off the turnip truck and have not a clue?

… Splain Lucy!!! (…please…)

Listen. I’m confident that if I was skinnier, with a better butt, and a better face I’d be a MUCH happier person. I don’t care if everyone else thinks I’m attractive enough…I Want to feel attractive to me…

What’s the big deal. It IS possible that people’s live can be improved through looking better. I know for a FACT mine would be. A good 75% of my depression is due to body issues. Remove body issues, remove depression.

What’s the prob?

Yeah, I watched it…the dental work was bleaching alone I think.

However, the guy had been obese and lost a bit of weight…he had a lot of extra skin…they removed it.

The guy also had had a broken nose making it kinda crooked…they fixed that.

One of the girls had a rather large nose with a hump…from the front it looked ok, but from the side, I could tell it was rather ungainly…

Oh well, if it worked for their egos…

Yeah, jar, but would it redirect your destiny?
