Haha! That’s what I came here to say.
The little horny squeak that Marge made is the highlight of the whole video.

Last time we had a Heavy Metal service, I recorded it and played it backwards:
I . b u r i e d . P a u l . . .
The interment in the church’s columbarium of a vial of his ashes will be next Sunday at noon, followed by a slide show of Paul’s life. And a potluck! A-J bring a hot dish, K-P some kind of Jell-O, and Q-Z a pie. That’s a homemade pie, Muriel.
On the album (In Deep) the song is followed by It’s Only Money Parts 1 & 2. Coincidence? I think not!
Oh, another church-worthy R&R song worth a mention: Jesus Is Just Alright.
So am I. There are a few good Christian rock songs but most of them drive me nuts. They are usually very trite, IMO. They can, however, improve a service if done well.
That said, I’m glad to hear you are staying on the wagon and even getting out a bit. It’s challenging in these Covid times but worth your while to stretch your limbs, enjoy the weather, and even get to see certain faces regularly. Even if it is just a person walking their dog.
Still more appropriate than “One Toke Over the Line” – which is not, despite what Lawrence Welk calls it here, a “modern spiritual.”
I’ve never been a church-goer, but for some reason back in the mid-90s my grandmother insisted on taking me to see a Christian rock concert at her church. There was even a pretty big Christian rap group (and there have been many others since, though not many too popular in the mainstream) over 30 years ago that I believe morphed into a sort of alternative rock group. Also had a few friends who were fans of that stuff way back then and have seen several late night tv ads for compilation CDs going back at least 20 years. I have no idea what they play now, as I don’t do church or most new musical artists.
How have we made it this far in the thread without someone mentioning Stryper?
I’ve used them as a punchline for decades.
But this summer, I was walking between stages (from The Smithereens to Great White & Slaughter… Milwaukee’s Summerfest has like a dozen stages). Wandering by one of the others, I thought “Damn, those guys are great! Tight rhythm section and hey, syncopation when needed, classic power chords, decent harmonies. I wonder who they… STRYPER? Seriously? … Crap, I owe them about a dozen apologies.”
.
“Why should the devil have all the good music?”
– Larry Norman, first Christian rocker I ever heard, who sounded raw and honest, nothing like what the genre has devolved into.
sample lyric:
I had a baby out of wedlock,
her old man got me in a headlock…
Stryper’s singer, Michael Sweet, has toured with Boston a few times in the years following Bradley Delp’s death. He’s one of only a handful of men who can hit some of those notes.
(and no, he didn’t sing “Smokin’” or “Party.”)
