They sang that? Really?-- revisited.

Back when I found out Queen sang You’re My Best Friend I started a thread just like this one. I really thought it was somebody like Loggins and Messina who did it. After watching VH1 for a little bit I’m remembering other “They sing that?” surprise moments.

The fact that Rick Ashley was white didn’t surprise me that much, not after Hall and Oates, Madonna and Lisa Stanisfield. (You know-- fool me once, shame on you. Fool me 28 times, send me to Special Ed classes) The fact that he was so tiny was what threw me. Just like Pia Zadora (remember her?). Tiny, little person with a big, big voice.

I’d heard Good Riddance about a dozen times before I found it was from Green Day (and that it was called Good Riddance.) Surprise, surpise.
Have you ever been surprised.

The first time I heard “MmmmBop” I thought it was sung as a duet by a middle-aged woman and man.

I was surprised to learn that Billie Holiday, not Nina Simone, originally sang Strange Fruit.

Mixing up Billie Holiday and Nina Simone isn’t too surprising, is it? Or thinking Hanson was a middle-aged woman. I mean I saw them and still thought they were women.

I saw a documentary about Bobby Darin a while ago, and the fact that the same person had hits with “Splish Splash”, Mack the Knife" and “If I Were a Carpenter” came as a bit of a surprise. He had more phases to his career than most people who live twice as long.
