They're Just The Wrong Shade Of Black, Okay? (A thread about women's shoes)

Out of my 60+ pairs of shoes, at least nine are black:

  1. high heeled strappy black (dressy)
  2. high heeled loafer (leather)
  3. high heeled loafer (suede w/ a little cow-fur looking stuff on top)
  4. high heeled loafer (fabric)
  5. 1 1/2" mules (fabric) - pointy toed
  6. 2" mules (fabric) - pointy toed
  7. flat mules (leather) - square toed
  8. 3" clogs (leather)
  9. 2" pumps (leather)

(I know there’s more; they’re somewhere in the back of the closet, forgotten)

I tried on a pair of black leather high-heeled loafers with snake skin Saturday and DIDN’T buy them (they fit AND looked good)! Mr. Golf was so proud of me.

And that’s just the leather family. The white to lavender shoes are satin.

I need to know when I’m licked. She wants an excuse to wear the dress at least one more time so we’re looking at the opera season. She wants to see Carmen and I’m holding out for La Boheme. Now I have to buy a damn suit, a sport coat won’t cut it. Don’t even suggest buying a tux. At least I have black shoes that match everything. Nice mundane wingtips. I don’t give a good rat’s ass that they squeak.

There are different shades of black, alright. I have a black sweater, black pants, black socks and black shoes. I bought them all separately.

One day I thought it’d make a cute outfit but when I put it on, OMG! It was hideous! The shirt was darker than the pants, which weren’t as dark as the socks but were darker than the shoes…argh!

I have:
1 pair workboots (brown)
1 pair jump boots (black)
2 pair tennis shoes (black/blue), one pair old and falling apart

1 pair dress shoes (black), formerly belonged to the US government (JROTC uniform shoes–you stay in all 4 years, you keep the shoes)

I knew that was it! There really are different shades of black!

Now, if only I could get my husband to understand accessorizing. Sure, I can wear black shoes with a red dress. But only if I’ve got black earrings, belt, and a bag. No, the blue earrings won’t work. I know they’re navy, which is indeed close to black, but it’s still not black.

Oh, and the earrings and the shoes have to be the same shade of black. Otherwise, people will look at you funny. They will.

I only have one pair of shoes…is that bad?

I have plenty of shoes in my closet, the thing is they are 5-10 years old and don’t fit my feet anymore because I wear my hiking/running shoes all the time. When I am home the shoes come off and in the winter my elf bootie slippers are on. (keep in mind I am only out of the house about 5 hours per day on the week days.)

So I am shoe impaired. I probably should just donate all those shoes to Goodwill as some of them are in great shape, worn maybe once or twice.

What would really kill me is to give away my calf skin c’boy boots. I love those boots but my feet spread so I can’t wear them anymore :frowning:

I have three pairs of shoes I wear, my new athletic expensive as all hell shoes, my hiking/running shoes and my crudy old athletic shoes that belong in the trash but refuse to trash them.

18 years old…
25 pairs of shoes. yeah, baby!

Yowza! I have three pairs of black shoes. Shiny patent leather mary janes, my beloved beat up old Docs, and loafers that I bought to wear to an old job. I don’t wear any of these shoes very often, as I am a confirmed sandal wearer - I have three pairs of everyday sandals, and one pair of dress sandals.

If I ever have more than 20 pairs of shoes (I have 11 right now) it will be time to do a major cleaning.

White Lightning, you have only seen the tip of the iceberg in US women’s clothing sizes. Since you say the even numbers aren’t used, I can tell you’ve been looking at “juniors”, which use odd numbered sized. The even numbered sizes in the same range are used for “misses”. Both are for women of roughly average height and build, but different figure types - curvier figures generally need misses sizes. It’s not always easy to find trendy clothes in misses, nor something suitable for a job interview in juniors.

Then we have “petite”, which generally means shorter than average but can also mean “built small”; “tall”, which alone among the women’s size ranges is self-explanatory (and which can be beastly hard to find); “women’s”, which is for larger/heavier women of average height; and “half-size”, same as “women’s” for shorter folks.

Why it is this way I do not understand. Here in Norway there is only one range, but lord help the petite woman; she’ll be sent over to the girls’ department!

silent_rob: Denim doesn’t count as its own material, silly! It’s a particular twill weave, almost always made of heavy cotton yarns. Off the top of my head, though, you can have cotton, wool, linen, cellulose fabrics like rayon, and synthetics like the polyesters and acrylics. Each class of fabrics requires different types of dye, and the colors never match perfectly. So, I have a lovely black linen vest - wouldn’t dare wear it with my equally lovely black wool skirt. They are totally different shades of black. (I understand that mixing linen and wool is also a major fashion faux pas, but that’s another matter.)

On to the shoes… I counted recently and I have ten pairs of shoes, not counting the rain boots that got ruined. All but two of these pairs are black. When I find something that works, I stick with it…

How about the four basic clothing groups: jeans, shorts, shirts, and nice shirts?

By George, I think she’s got it.

Cristi, I am with you sister!

I once had a quite heated argument with my SIL about the color of the dresses she picked for bridesmaids. She swears it was peacote blue ( whatever the hell color *that * is.(Navy, according to her) I, and the other bridesmaids, said the dresses were black.

This went back and forth for weeks. When she picked out the shoes ( black to wear, no less)

I showed up at the church wearing navy shoes with my black dress. She just about shit her control top panty hose. I calmly stated that a navy dress should have navy shoes. Mind you that the navy shoes did not match at all because the dresses were and still are black.
AND, so show you what a pain in the ass I really am, told her I would walk down the aisle wearing the navy shoes to prove my point.( Not that anyone pays attention to the bridesmaids anyway.) unless she conceeded my point.

Through gritted teeth she just said, " OK fine, you win, the dress is black. Now change your shoes."

I then proceeded to pull out of my duffel bag large black and tan galoshes . She nearly killed me. And I then yanked out the over priced black toe pinchers to stuff my feet into that I paid $60 to wear for about 25 yards.

Some people have no sense of humor.

Man, I don’t think I’ve owned thirty different pairs of shoes over the course of my entire life.

( Of course, when you’re in the US and you’re hooked on Doc Martens, you try to spend the $120 as rarely as possible. )

Shirley, that blue is pea coat blue. It’s the color of Navy pea coats - you know, those double-breasted short winter coats that sailors wear. It is a very dark blue, not black, but it could be mistaken for black unless you held something that is definitely black right next to it. (Not to say that your SIL wasn’t mistaken about which color the dresses really were.)

Signed, a military brat.

Hm. I have 15 pairs of shoes. Six of them are black. I’m a guy. Does that make me bad? I like shoes. I want more.

I honestly have no idea how many pairs of shoes I own. A lot. Some are loose in the closet, the dress shoes stay in their original boxes and are stacked on the closet shelves, and some are in big clear shoe boxes under my bed.

I probably have at least 15 different pairs of black shoes. Black pumps, black flats, black woven flats, black boots, black mules, black suede lace-up boots, black suede and patent leather hush puppies (COOLEST damn pair I own. And I got them for $15.), black sandal slides, black Birkenstocks, black mule sandals, black strappy sandals, black wedge sandals, black loafers, black high heel loafers, black heeled oxfords… And then I have some brown shoes, some navy, some cream/white for summer, some sneakers, and a few in weird colors. (Green andred hush puppies, and burgandy flats) Yes, I’m a shoe hound.

Thank god I buy almost all my shoes at discount places. The only things I pay full price for are the Birkenstocks, and the pumps - I like Nordstroms pumps, and they NEVER go on sale. :frowning:

Okay.

Vans and Eccos are mentioned. Never heard of 'em. Care to enlighten me?

I just put four pairs of sandals into the basement. White, red, brown, and black. I own at least five pairs of heels, one of which is black; 6 pairs of flats, one of which is black; and several pairs of ankle-high lace up shoes. There are most certainly more that I am not thinking of… and I haven’t mentioned boots yet.

I am still trying to find a pair of neutral coloured flats to replace my almost worn out ones, and have yet to find a pair the same colour. There are far, far too many shades of tan and/or neutral and/or taupe or whatever the heck that colour is out there!

I’ve got lots and lots of shoes, but only 4 pairs of black that I can think of off the top of my head. And I rarely wear black - you want matching issues, look at brown shoes.

But, black:

  1. low heels, matte satin w/ ankle strap
  2. cloggish things with clunky plastic soles
  3. loafers with cute soles
  4. the black medium heels I wore for touring choir

However, only one of them (#3) are actually at school with me. Looking at my closet, floor, etc, here, I have

  1. my tan airwalks
  2. medium brown fishermen sandals
  3. adidas running shoes
  4. burgandy T-straps
  5. leopard print clogs
  6. brown doc martens
  7. the black loafers
  8. shiny purple flats
  9. 5" sparkly silver heels
  10. “natural” sandals with 4" heels
  11. fake birks
  12. my work sneakers

and there are lots lots more at home.

  1. black loafers
  2. black sandles
  3. black Birkenstocks
  4. high heeled pumps
  5. high heeled pumps with the strap around the heel
  6. high heeled strappy “fuck me” heels
  7. black sneakers for work
  8. black Doc Martins(sp?)
  9. black low heels
  10. black winter boots
and at least a dozen other pairs of shoes that I swear I need and wear all the time!!
