I’m so freaking excited my brain is going to vibrate out of my skull and I don’t have anybody to tell! My boyfriend (yes, Mr. Rebound who everybody gave me very good common-sense advice not to get too attached to in my breakup thread except it’s worked out ridiculously well so far and I remain giddily happy in a manner very unlike myself) is currently living an hour and a half away from me and working an extra hour further than that from where he lives. This situation has become intolerable (as has his job in general) and he marched into his boss’ office Monday to give notice and move here without a job in the hopes that he’d get something before too long. (He’s looking to switch industries anyway.) I told him to ask for telecommuting, because he’s got nothing to lose if they say no and he can do every single stupid part of his job anywhere in the world with an internet connection, but they’re a very traditional company in a traditional industry and he had little hope that they’d go along with it.
Well, they hemmed and they hawed, and they offered him a raise to make up for the commute, and he thought about it but decided no, not good enough, he was leaving. So they… said yes to the telecommute! Holy crap! He’s going to move here with a job, after we’d made all sorts of contingency plans and started a massive job hunt and talked about it ad nauseum and decided to take the leap… and we didn’t have to!
Seriously, this is such amazingly good news I don’t even know how to process it yet! What a hell of a self-esteem boost - I can’t imagine quitting and having my boss say “Okay, what do we have to do to keep you? Change the way we’ve always done business? Sure, why not?” I’d be more likely to get “Don’t let the doorknob hit you in the ass on the way out, sister!” Not to mention that it’s functionally a raise, when you consider how much he was spending in gas going there and coming here every weekend.
This is such good news, and familywise and otherwise I haven’t had a lot of that lately. Woot!
