They're remaking "When Worlds Collide"

I liked the new Mummy films. I would have like Van Helsing a lot better if it & the character had been named something else.

A few years ago, wasn’t Spielberg going to do When Worlds Collide?

I get what you mean CalMeacham. Personally, I’d love to see the world of Cordwainer Smith brought to the screen in a respectful way, but that’s never going to happen. I hope this is good.

Ha, well, I never said it was a great movie, I said it was awesome and I loved it. It’s just so much damned fun! My husband and I got into the goofy mindset of it right away and had a grand old time. I love my husband.

There are more than enough Serious Dramas about vampires, Dracula, Frankenstein and the character of Van Helsing, a laugh about them is needed every now and then. This isn’t anywhere near as good as Young Frankenstein, but it belongs on the same shelf, and I think it’s better than at least the 2nd and 3rd Mummy movies. I’d have to see the first one again to jog my memory about it. I remember enjoying it, but not as much as I remember enjoying Van Helsing.

That would be major-league cool. So, of course, they won’t do it. :frowning:

Is it not possible that Sommers just likes the story or the '51 movie as a fan, and wants to re/make it from that perspective? I think something along those lines comes through with his other B movie remakes/homages. Not saying they’re all good, but I quite enjoy both Mummy movies and Van Helsing.

Or maybe I just enjoy Rachel Weisz and Kate Beckinsale.

Well, that news just gave me some terrible thrills.

Actually, in the movie, Professor Hendron had decided that he and Sidney Stanton were going to stay behind. As the rioting workers storm the gates at the bottom of the loading ramp, Hendron throws the switch to retract the gangplank and releases the rocket from it’s moorings. Stanton goes into a rage, rises up from his wheelchair and takes a step. He realizes he can walk as the ship slides away down the launch ramp.

If you really want a theory, I was thinking special effects have improved while restraint has not increased, and that’s similar to the climate that inspired much of the original science fiction, when the public was wondering about the limits of technological growth without restraint. Either that or it’s just another moviemaker capitalizing on the name recognition of the source property.

Gen-Xers aren’t the audience. They’re all, or mostly, their 30s, and the audience for this movie would be younger.

:tips hat: Thank you, Hal Briston. The “When Worlds Collide” joke is possibly my favorite one in the movie. And it’s also the only reason I’ve heard of the movie in the first place.
