I keep hearing about folks making one and keeping it in their wallet (or some such). Checking things off as you do them. Adding new ones as they occure to you.
It seems like a great idea at first but I know I’d get depressed if I just wasn’t checking things off as quickly as I’d like. It would serve as a constant reminded that perhaps I’m not doing enough with my life.
I do. Currently longest outstanding entry on the list is my life-long desire to someday vote in an election for a Communist Party candidate, just so I can say I once did.
Well, that’s the point, sorta. Ok, not the depressed part, but the part that motivates you to do something. The “hey, why aren’t I doing these things” part. It is supposed to remind you to do more, so that you don’t feel that you aren’t doing enough with your life.
I have one. One of the items on it was to learn glassblowing. When I had the opportunity to take a class, I was hesitant at first, but then I realized that if it was important enough to be on the list, I should get off my ass and do it. I did, and while I am terrible at it and won’t take another class ($500 for some lumpy paperweights), I have even more of an appreciation for people who blow glass and the satisfaction of knowing I took a chance.

The only real item on my Do Before I Die list is this:
Spend at least one year (365.25 days) in Havasupai Canyon, AZ (affectionately known as just “Supai”). I am currently at 47 days and hope to return for at least 3 more in September. Here is one reason why it’s worth the long hike (10 miles plus).
I don’t really have a “do before I die” list, it’s just a “things I want to do someday and can’t afford to do all at once right now” list. And yes, I am checking things off of it. I took classes on kayaking and candy making. I took up rollerblading.
I’ll probably keep adding to it throughout my life and then crossing things off as I get to them. It’s just nice at the start of a summer or beginning of a new year to look at the list and pick something(s) to cross off.
Die? What? Speak for yourselves. I plan to live forever, or at least a good deal longer than a measly 80 years or so.
You laugh like I’m joking. I’m dead serious. Just in the past 50 years the average life expectancy has shot up through the roof, and now there are articles about the human brain learning to control bionic implants. I figure in a few decades, transferring my brain to an android body will be at least a possibility. If not, there’s always cryogenics. Hey, it’s better than nothing.
