Things I see in the Forest

I am training for my West Coast Trail through-hike at the end of July so every day I go walking in the woods. I live close to Mt. Arrowsmith and at the base and foothills there are miles and miles of old logging roads connected by narrow, winding paths deep in the forest. It can be a little spooky walking alone miles away from anyone but I have my trusty companion, Hannah or “Mighty Poo-Hunter Who Never Misses Mark”. So that makes me feel a bit more secure. It can also be incredibly beautiful.

The paths we go on are also used by mountain bikers. In fact part of the area is used for a big race in the summer so some of the trails are maintained and used year-round. Every once in a while I’ll see something that someone has set up and I take a picture of it. Like the Watcher in the woods and a tree that looks like Jar Jar Binks. Here’s a “tree” made of old cigarette tins.

Anyway just thought I’d share!

Just wanted to say nice pics, and good luck on your West Coast Trail hike.

My Wife and I live on two acres that back up the White River National Forest in the Colorado mountains. A hike starts as soon as we step out the door. It’s wonderful, and after 24 years here, I still get awed.

A friendly moose cutting our ‘grass’ for us

Thanks! I feel pretty fortunate to be in the same position as you as far as having the wilderness right outside your front door.

I love moose but I have to admit, I’m glad we don’t have them on the island. Same with grizzlies. Grizzlies and moose are terrifying! I regularly see black bears and even saw cougar tracks but I don’t find those too scary. Not like moose and grizzlies

I’m glad our dogs are smart enough to stay away from moose and black bears. We’ve been told there are mountain lions/cougars in the area, but have never seen one. THOSE are scary if they get surprised are hungry or desperate. It’s bad to surprise a moose too.

The moose seem so docile, but I think it’s because they know they’re the biggest and badest in the forest. They ain’t afraid of nothing.
